Hey guys, I've got a 98 Audi 1.8T. I've had a k04 and chip for a while and wanted
to get more performance. I was recommended to port and polish the intake and
exhaust. We found out they used abrasive material to do it like gritty sand.
So I got with my friend that tunes Hondas and we decided to try it
ourselves. We got a bag of sandblasting sand and hooked up into the intake
and started the car. We had to hold the gas so it would run. He wanted to
let the engine suck in the sand through the intake so it would port it out
and then push it out the ehxaust so it would port the exhaust manifold.
I was worried that it might cause problems but he figured it'd be OK as long
as we didn't make boost and it get sucked in the turbo. After running the
car and letting it suck in sand we got about half way through a 25 lb bag.
The check engine light was on and the engine was bucking and kicking and
sounding really weird. We stopped and hooked the car back up normal and took
off the sand supply. We tried to start it again and it was really hard. Once
started it couldn't idle and kept making weird noises. We took it out and
drove it and it started to make scraping and knocking noises.
Help! Can anyone tell me what to do! My buddy only does Hondas so he doesn't
know much about Audis..............

It's so obvious I cannot believe none caught on to this. The problem was he used the wrong grade sand! :rolleyes:

I had a receptionist that used to open her hood and use the high pressure wand washer on her engine. Direct quote: "My engine is so clean you could eat off of it".

She worked with me less than a year, and in that time frame that car was no longer working. I think it was still less than 2 years old. Amazing.

I've used a pressure washer on every car engine I've onwned (except the Porsche) for 25 years.
I've had zero trouble and put well over a hundred thousand miles on each (except the Ford Tortise -- but that's another story!! -- and it has nothing to do with the engine washing!!).

Don't spray directly on the distributor or other 'soft' (foil wrapped hoses etc.) parts, and don't spray into the air intake. It alows you to see if you are developing any serious oil leaks and keeps everything clean and easy to see and nice to work on.

BTW -- IF there IS anybody stupid enough to do this the their German car -- they should be imediately neutured -- you guys KNOW how I feel about manditory involuntary neutering!

I had 142,000 miles on my "Tortise" when I sold it. It was still on the original CV joints. I know a little about making cars last. I also got that one up to an indicated 137 mph. Not bad since Road & Track topped theirs out at 142. If you haven't guessed, it was an '89 SHO.
Maybe you're right. It was a Dodge after all. Probably wouldn't have mattered what she did, it was doomed from the start. Kinda like this thread.

Why no pressure wash on the Porsche's? I never do it unless I am tracking an oil leak, and am REALLY careful. But, I have never heard to not do so. In fact, I think Pelican even has an article on how to do it right. (Might be elsewhere, though)...
