What is the rarest 944?

So this is a somewhat subjective question given differences in availability between Us and the ROW cars but given the ONE parameter of "Had to be available for retail sale" what do you feel is the rarest 944?

968 turbo for sure, then 89 NA and 944S.

There was a 944 turbo club sport model available for retail sale at certain dealers. Iirc there were 15 total and Al Holbert had 9 of them. They had option code m637, basically a Turbo Cup car for the street, one was offered on eBay recently I think they wanted around $200k for it.

Hey V2, help me understand please. Why is '89 NA on your list? According to Wikipedia, there were less 87 & 88s.

Just seems that the 89s are hens teeth. 2.5s even 88s are relatively dime a dozen.

I've only ever seen 1 89 na in person in 15 yrs.

A friend of mine owned one of the Calloways back in the early 2000s. I have lots of pics of it someplace. Painted in a bizarre/cool kind of silvery blue battleship camo kind of paint job. Fast as hell. Had a little round badge on the sail panel that said "Calloway Turbo" or something like that. Neat car. Nobody wanted them back then (except me).

Any unmolested originals are the rarest Since the original poster asked about the 944 and most replies have been about the 968, How about Baltic Blue Turbo? As I recall from past posts only a few were made. I have common as weeds red 84 and grey metallic 89 S2

If you want to be pedantic, the Nautic Metallic Turbo S - There is only one.

Byron used to own it (Racerbvd), but I think he sold it last year or so.

Assuming you are referring to road production cars with unique model identifiers that were advertised and publicly available, the rarest of the 944 generation would officially be the 944 Turbo Cabriolet. Anything "rarer" was simply an option package. Out of the entire run 924-968, the 968 Turbo S would be the rarest. The 924 "S2" is slightly rarer, but it was not publicly advertised and did not receive an official model identifier. There are a few country-specific "importer specials" that are similarly rare. There are plenty of rare motorsport cars as well.

Saying a car is rare because it was the only one produced in that color doesn't make sense, because there are hundreds of others that are equally "rare." The color isn't even paint-to-sample. There are plenty of cars that actually did get paint-to-sample. The 968 Turbo S shown above is paint-to-sample. It is also the only 968 TS to have door guards. Does that make it even rarer? Most of the 968 TS's are "one of one."

Furthermore, the 944 Turbo "S" was arguably not a model at all, but simply an option package available for only one year.

There are thousands of cars that have unique groupings of colors and options. Then there are hundreds of cars that got Special Wishes / Exclusive options at Werk 1. Then there are VIP cars that got extra special treatment at Special Wishes / Exclusive. How far do you want to go.

Looks like there were similar numbers of 944S, S2 and 968 models produced. A decent unmolested example of any of these on the street is fun to see. Actually a decent, unmolested 944NA, 924 or 924S is also fun to spot these days.
