I ran this by the 924.org board, but I want to see what you guys think...

While cleaning and repairing my fuel/ air delivary system I found that the EGR valve is not working and that the line may be the primary cause of soot in the intake manifold (due to a 26 year old filter). After checking around, the parts seem to be vary hard to find and cost a fair amount. I was wondering if it was ok to remove the EGR valve and the EGR filter. I could plug the exhaust line where it hits the exaust pipe, bolt a plate over the hole in the manifold where the vale went, and just plug the vacume line. Also, it looks like I could remove the temp valve from the cooling system back by the heater valve. Anybody have any input on this? I don't think it would hurt anything, and boy would it save me some headache and ca$h. The car should be old enough to be exempt from emissions testing.

I can't swear to it but what you propose sounds like it would work. Most older v-8s offer aftermarket manifolds that can be purchased with or without egr hole- it doesn't seems to matter on them.

I finally removed the EGR filter and it was rusted through, if you shake it stuff comes out, and if you block the rust holes and blow through it, there is no airflow. At this point I decided that it really wasn't doing its job anyway, so until I can find the parts it is out of the loop. Blackfoot, do you know our exact laws concering older cars? Can you get a ticket for not having the system in place? Or is it too old for that too?

i would think that since your car is exempt by law, they will not investigate. http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/automotive_pages.htm | ||

That's good, it will still look like it is in too, so I will not worry. Now to get it on the road! How many 924/944 owners do you know of out here?

What the EGR system isn't working? Officer I had no Idea........ EGR can be removed an the engine wont care. You will need to make sure both holes and vacum lines are sealed well. Leaks will cause poor idling. Newer cars have sensors conected to the EGR valve, and removing them might be a problem. It is illegeal to remove or modify emmisions equipment that was originaly installed even if the car is exempt. Nobody is going to investigate. I have only hear of one person who ever got cought. The police used the modify smog equipment to impound his car, but he was hotrodding it down main street.
