major clutch problems, please help

Ok, this is the scoop. I was pulling out onto a road and was putting my '83 944 into 2 gear when i heard like a clattering noise, like something broke and was getting dragged. So I coasted into a nearby(thank God) parking lot, at a gas station.

I can freely move around the gears when the car is not turned on, but when I start it in neutral, I can't get it into any gear at all. I can START it in any gear, but when I go to switch gears it goes into neutral fine, but will not go into any other gear. I am in serious need of help, PLEASE, PLEASE, help me if you can. Yes, I AM BEGGING YOU. Thank you in advance.

Guys, can anyone help. I would rather do the work myself, than spend $$$$ to have it fixed at a garage. Help

Sounds like it could be a release lever/bearing problem. Also, the pressure plate to flywheel bolts could be loose. Probably have to take it all apart to find out though.

When you try to put it into gear from neutral, when running, will it just not go? Or does it grind?

It did not go at all. The problem is fixed thanx to my mechanic. It cost $1,300 to get the clutch replaced and I had him check out the timing belt while he was working on it. He replaced that as well. Thanx for the reply's.

Yeah, specially if your like me and still trying to pay it off. Luckly for me, I borrowed the money from my dad, so needless to say I don't have to pay interest, but I do have to listen to him nag about it. In the end it was all worth. Don't you think?

I cleared it with the girlfriend/wife. I'm gonna spend the $1300 plus by doing it myself and at the same time building a decent tool set. Hell, I'd rather build a tool set then pay $1300 on labor, right? That way, I can get the 7 volume workshop manuals, tool set, and the Sachs Cup Clutch Kit. This seems like a much better value to me than just blowing $1300 straight on labor.

I don't wanna buy Craftsman though, any ideas?

Well, if I had the time I would have loved to work on it myself also, but I don't.

I really don't like Craftsman, because I think that the company is run by jerks(just my opinion). The only good thing about Craftsman is that they hold a lifetime warranty on all of their tools. But how often does a tool break.

They don't warranty their torque wrenches for life. I broke mine in six months and they won't replace it.

Try Facom, (the best), SnapOn, Matco...

I haven't snapped a torque wrench, but I have broken probably 15 tools in the past 3 years or so. I just take the remains into the store, as long as you can read the word craftsman on it, the guy goes to the shelf and hands me a new one. No quesions asked, no paperwork, and there everywhere. Not too crappy in my book (aside from breaking, but thats only when I'm really abusing them).

Giela, what do you consider "really abusing" them? When I installed my cat-back exhaust, I had to use a hydraulic jack under the end of the wrench to loosen the nuts. If that's not "abusing" a tool, I don't know what is. This wasn't a Craftsman wrench; it did bend a little, but didn't break.
