944S2 engine run problem

The car runs fine except occasionally while driving this summer the engine has started to lose power and continues until it decreases to idle. No amount of accelerator play will raise the RPM's to above idle. After a short time something clicks under the hod and the engine resumes normal operation. It feels like fuel has stopped getting to the engine.I would appreciate any info as to the possible source of this problem, as it can be quite dangerous.

Clicking under the hood? Does the engine die completely, then suddenly start running again (if you're in gear) when you hear the click? Sounds like it might be the DME relay.
