Projects while Bored at Home

I'm sure I'm not the only one kind-of bored during these Stay at Home Orders so let's learn how to replace rod bearings, right? My spare "training tool" engine is perfect for this! Thanks to Porsche (factory Service Manual) and Van Svenson for his excellent video.

If my wife and I don't get laid off in the next few weeks, I may bite the bullet and purchase that holy grail - restored dashboard.

That's what I've been told.

It’ll be a good investment, methinks.

So today I decided to perform some cleanup in the engine bay. I've never taken the alternator/AC compressor bracket off so why not...

Found an O-ring and two small flat washers in that pocket of debris...

I also discovered that someone (gotta love them PO's) used a 1/2" SAE bolt/nut to clamp the steering shaft. In case anyone was wondering: Bolt N 010 335 7, Locking Nut 900 910 022 09 (I think it's superseded by -03). More to come...

Everything is looking good guys! Glad to see you're not just sitting around! Lets get these machines ready for summer.

Surprising all the crud one finds when things get taken apart. Can of worms! One thing leads to another, but, Isn't that what we all seem to enjoy?????

mytrplseven 04-26-2020 01:30 PM

I've been rebuilding locking system on my doors. The paint shop didn't know how to put the things back together and inded up damaging the mechanisms. While in there, learned how to adjust the windows on the regulators, replacing the upper window guide rails and new plastic door weather liner plus all the damaged parts. Now on to the passenger door.

Solving water leaks front and rear so I can reinstall padding and carpet, and then some beautiful recovered seats in burgundy. Also cleaning carpet and armor-all to everything in sight. If I could only follow JJeffries lead on the dash rehab I would have a decent interior again.

We're hoping to move to the St Andrews area next summer (2021), Ernie. If so, I'll be bringing a 924s race car and one for the street. They can always use some company for wrenching in exchange for some pizza and beer and who knows what else?! :)

Naturally, I'd sell them both in a heart beat to put myself back in the seat of a 928! ;)

Decided to remove the steering shaft for a closer inspection; it's pretty tired so I guess a new one is in order. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1588041627.jpg

So the replacement shaft finally came in...! I spent today finishing up putting everything together.

Replacement shaft: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589594258.jpg

Cleaned bracket:

Aligning the steering rack by removing the red plastic drain plug and shift the wheels until the small dimple can be seen in the drain hole.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1589594515.jpg

Shaft installed; I found mounting the upper end first, then the entire steering column can be rotated to align the bolt depression on the rack.

I also replaced the reservoir to steering pump hose since I kept having weeping issues. There must have been a TSB as the hose has been redesigned, eliminating the need to secure it on the water pump.

Everything buttoned up and ready for the road. I took her out for a nice 30 mile drive around town this afternoon.

Lookin' good. Should make a big difference.
I'm getting the fever to drive too. Waiting for one part and I'm good to go. Just put a new set of 18" Michelin Pilot Sport 4S's on. Just need an alignment and I'm out!
Anyone know a " GOOD" alignment guy?
I found that most of them just turn screws until the light turns green and have no idea why! Just sayin'.

Stoneguy 05-16-2020 05:43 AM

Guess I should say where!🤣
That would be around the Easton, MA area!

pfarah 05-16-2020 07:12 AM

South Shore Auto Works in Kingston,MA has one of those big money Hunter alignment racks. They know Porsches better than the dealers and their prices are fair. Great guys as they're enthusiasts.

Stoneguy 05-16-2020 07:56 AM

Thanks Patrick,
Exactly the info I was looking for. I'll give them a shot.

jjeffries 05-16-2020 07:59 AM

Nice work Patrick.

Was the original steering shaft just cosmetically challenged, or did the u-joints show some play? Thanks for the steering rack know-how; new to me.

pfarah 05-16-2020 09:39 AM

Wayne is the front manager/service writer and is a great guy.

As for the steering shaft, it was actually still in good shape, just as you say - cosmetically challenged...! The U-joints still operate smoothly.
