87 924s running hot with A/C on

My 87 924s runs over 3/4 on the temp guage when my A/C is on. Water levels are fine, and i'm on fresh oil. I've heard of water wetter (is it worth it?) and do you have anyother suggestions?

I went through 1 yr of this problem on a 86 944. Tried water weter(2 btls). It is a good product. However to cure the problem(14mos later)required changing the thermostat. I also changed the radiator at that time. **********.com have reasonable prices.

Are you sure that the second fan is kicking on when you turn on the air?!???? There are several relays that control things in the car. Depending on the exact year, etc there should be a fan relay and separate A/C relay either of which could cause the second fan not to have power. I found this to be a rather common problem on other forums. Since I autocross race and am preparing my current car for this too, I've already changed to dedicated relay circuits for both fans (power directly from battery). The "normal" fan runs when signaled from the temp sensor and even runs if the car is off. The A/C fan is also directly powered, but only runs if the A/C switch is on. Works real well for me. Later.....

924/944 series cars tend to run hot. It is not uncommon for the temp. guage to reach the 3/4 mark in summer driving with the A/C on. The fix is simple (presuming the relays, etc. are in good working order).

Install a lower temp. thermostat (160°) instead of the stock one which is I believe 195° or so.

Install a lower temp. fan switch which will make the fans kick in at 25° cooler than stock.

These two simple steps should get the your temp. guage down to about the 1/4 mark or so.

Also, have you had the radiator checked for proper flow? Make sure that the water is flowing freely. Also don't forget to burp the cooling system after adding water or antifreeze. This is a simple procedure which is described in the Haynes repair manual.

Good luck.
