Convert A/C to R143?
I need to replace my compressor anyway, and the guy at Griffiths told me the conversion to R134 works good on the 944. I think it will save me money in the long run, but I want to know if it really works well. Has anybody done the conversion and how well does it work. Thanks for any input.

My oled mans 951S has R134, it cools the air just fine but the shop says they have seen a correlation between R134 conversions and bad evaporator cores. Expensive replacement but then R12 is $60+ a pound so you probably save in teh long run.

I had this conversion done on my 83 last summer. It cost me about $1400. The big cost was the condensor. Mine was cracked. I looked everywhere, couldn't find a used one, so had to bite the bullet and buy new.

I changed mine over to the Sanden compressor, and 134a. It does alright, but like the man said, the early cars had terrible airflow. I like my a/c COLD. That's why I said it's alright. We have a 97 Olds' Cutlass also, and the a/c in my car is almost as cold as the Cutlass.

Can't recall whether I sent you a note about this. I converted two of my vehicles to an alternate refrigerant that is quite inexpensive and can be mixed with F12. The F12 will eventually leak out leaving the new stuff. I did my 1980 450SL about 4 years ago. It is still cooling well. Two years ago I added it to my 1986 944turbo. It works even better in it. So far there have been no problems with either car. If you are interested, let me know. A full charge costs about $15.

just vac. mine up and put the mineral oil and 134-a also i put a leeak detector and that was it...never had a problem and i drive my 944 everyday with a/c on....done it on my 928 lasy yr. and never had a problem..but stupid me...i put a supercharger on my 928 and my a/c has to go...too bad...

A correlation between R134A and evaporator failure???? Sounds very strange to me since evap's for both refrigerants are constructed from the same materials. I converted my '79 924 and my '84 944. Both blow 45 deg. F. As far as condensers are concerned, there are universal high efficiency serpentine aluminum condensers available from J. C Whitney for around $75. These work great. I changed all of the o-rings but not the hose and have not seen any problems with lost refrigerant in either car. Both were converted 2 years ago.
