Tranny Drop With No Engine Easier?

Question about dropping the trans on my '87NA. My engine is currently out to the car, but I can find no reference to dropping a tranny with the engine out.

But with no engine, it looks to me like once I disconnect the shifter-related components, as well as the exhaust stuff, and drive axles, I should be able to twist and slide the torque-tube forward and drop the tranny straight down, and also possibly leave the drive rod coupler connected on the tranny side? Does this make sense?

That sounds right, but it's been a long time since I've had the engine out with the transmission installed.

You don't even need to move the torque tube; once the coupler is off the shaft and the bolts undone (and the dowel pins disengaged) the trans comes straight down.

944 has about the easiest transmission to remove in the auto world...aside from maybe a VW bug.

Couldn't agree more with V2. 90% of the pain of tranny removal are the bell housing bolts and dealing with that pin you have to slide hammer out up at the bell housing. Dropping the tranny with the engine out is the way to go if you've got something to do on the trans.
