Flat-Bottom Steering Wheel Mod?

I'm 6'1" - and while I'm very comfortable in my '87NA once I'm in...it takes a bit of effort to drag my knees under the steering wheel while getting into the car, even with the seat adjusted to its lowest position.

So I'm thinking that there may be a way to alter the shape of my (stock 944) steering wheel, to flatten the bottom rung out a bit...to provide a bit more space for the slide-in.

Anybody here either try this or know somebody who has? And if so, how was his accomplished...and were the results good?

Note: I realize that I could go with a smaller diameter steering wheel, but I actually really like the diameter of my current one...once I am seated!

Porsche already thought of that, you need to find an extended hub steering wheel which was option code M018 for our cars. I bought one for my car and it’s wasn’t too hard to find one.

I have an 83 that had the original 3 spoke wheel. I bought a period correct 4 spoke wheel which is smaller.

I don't know what came stock on your 87 but is this an option.

BTW, I never knew of the extension - interesting.

Dan, thanks for the link. That unit looks a bit ragged but likely perfectly functional. Looks like there are also a few aftermarket units around for a bit less dough...but I'd want to vet these out thoroughly for compatibility - like horn function, for example (although making a wire extension would be very easy.)

At any rate...I had not considered an extension, but I can see how this would move the wheel just a bit closer to my position, and thus allow my knees to slide in a bit easier.

My understanding is you need to disassemble your steering wheel in order to add that extension, its about a 30mm gain though.
