Clutch Project Problems

I'm just finishing up a clutch replacement project on my ‘86 944, but now I’ve got a problem. When I try to start the car it acts like it has a dead battery. The starter turns very slowly and the car will not start. My first thought was battery, so I charged it and even tested it in a 924S were it worked fine. The starter was working fine before. So, I’m at a loss as to what to check next. I’m going to start rechecking connection tonight and I’m open to any and all suggestions on were to look.
Thanks

hello,

i had almost an IDENTICAL problem and as far fetched as it seems... your battery terminals may be dirty on your 944.

clean them up with battery terminal cleaning brushes and give it another shot! also make sure the battery cables in the 944 aren't bad.

these parts can corrode slowly and then build up to the car being hard to start. when it happened to my 924, it totally puzzled me, but for some reason, that was it!

good luck!

Ditto what robinson says, also check the connections at the starter itself, the ground on mine is completely exposed and was coroded quite badly

Thanks Guys,

I also suspected that but the cables were fine. The problem was that in my haste to get the thing back together I missed the main battery to engine ground. It connects to the top of the bell housing and is hard to see or get to. I found it when I started tracing the wires and noticed it was hanging free.

Thanks again for the information

Garage
It is still grounded through the chasis, but it didn't have a good enough connection to turn the motor enough to start.

Check the ground strap from the body to the motor, just above where the flywheel sensors are.
