Alternator Belt-Help!!!

I was driving to work this morning and my alternator belt snapped. I replaced the a/c compressor with an aftermarket compressor from Vertex Auto that was a real challenge to put in because it was not a direct fit. After I put the compressor in the belt started whinning so I sprayed it with belt dressing, but it did not help, than this morning the belt snapped. What is the reason? Do I need to re-position the a/c compressor? Do I need a special belt? Please help!!!!!!
What do I need to do to correct this problem?

Check the alignment of the pulleys. Do you have the broken belt? If you do and things were not aligned properly, it will show it.

It sounds like your belt tension was to light. The belt needs to be tight. Over time the noise you hear is making heat and will cause the belt to fail. I had one do the same thing. I does not take a long time.

I replaced my factory A/C compressor with the Sanden unit from Vertex this past summer. You are right...the installation is not all that simple. I had to modify the top unused "ear" on a grinder in order to get it to fit tight enough.

Tri is also right. The belt must be very tight. If you have already tightened as far as the new compressor will allow, you may need to take it back off and grind the ear down some.

Good luck.
