Arrow Semi loud Tick..Tick..Tick...

I just acquired a semi-loud tick when the engine is at idle, the sound increases as the engine’s RPM go up.

Items to note:

** It is coming from the top half of the engine.
** Power has NOT decreased. (Nervous to drive it)
** I just changed my Oil.
** Oil pressure is up. (A good thing)

Any thoughts?

AJ

A loud ticking after an oil change? Well, the most common LOUD ticking from the top end of the engine is the lifters. They should quiet out through time. dont know why they would be ticking after an oil change though. You put enouh oil in the car? What weight you use? Another common ticking would be the injectors but they usually dont get louder with the rpms. They usually fade out with high rpms due to engine noise.

I do recall reading somewhere......someone said to check the pressure relief valve.....when the run is started from cold....the oil is running thick...and if the relief valve is not working properly.....this makes the hydraulic lifters a little "sticky"......until the engine warms up.....an oil becomes more viscous.....and the "stickiness" goes away......and engine runs more smoothly.....

AJM, another question.....did you happen to use a different grade of oil uring the oil change? What was the previous and current grade of oil?

Are you sure it is not the injectors? They do make a ticking sound.
You may try a cardboard tube to listen and see if the sound is coming from the valve cover or the injectors.

I had this same proplem so I took it to the shop and they laugh at me because it was my injectors. They are loud on a 944.

Or you can use a screwdriver. hold the business end on the inj, the other end on your ear. Does the noise go away when it warms up? do a comp. check.

If you can hear it with the hood closed its probably not an injector. Stuck lifters can be more of a clacking than a ticking.

Thank you everyone, After reading all of the postings I got in the car and drove her down the street, by the time I got to Dunkin Donuts for my coffee, the noise went away!

Now I can hear the lifters at their normal noise levle.

I will say, it did freak me out!

Thanks again !!

Dude, you should barely be able to hear your lifter and very much hear your injectors.

Would suggest running a bottle of "motor flush" through the engine right before your next oil change.

Follow directions on the label exactly.

It couldn't hurt to pull out your 710 pressure relief valve and see if there is any scuffing. if there is, smooth it out with emery paper.

it releives pressure from the oil system?
