Wiring help for 944S engine in 924S

I have finally transplanted a 16v engine into my 924S. Lots of things I still need to hook up but most of it is obvious.

The thing I need help with is the ignition control module wiring. I've found enough data on the 9 and 14 pin connectors (by the brake booster) to figure out all but a few of the wires. I haven't been able to find any wiring diagrams for the 944S engine.

1: The green wire in the connector by the brake booster is for the ignition system on both engines. Is this a simple case of connecting the green wire from the 944S harness to the green wire in the 924S harness, or is something else required because of the ignition control module of the 944S?

2: Pin 12 on the 944S connector is a red 12v line from fuse #7. Pin 7 on the 924S is a red/black 12v line from the ignition switch. Do these go together?

3: I don't have the ignition control module or see any plug for it on the 944S engine harness. Where exactly does it plug in? Does it have its own short harness to tie into the engine or chassis wiring somewhere?

4: Separate issue concerning the long black connector under the dash for the gauges...will that need some rewiring as well to make the gauges work properly?

I'm also curious if it's possible to eliminate the ignition control module from the 944S ignition system. And if it makes any difference, the engine has an S2 intake.

These are the resources I've found so far:

That ICM is needed, it takes a low power signal from the DME and charges/discharges the coil at a much higher power level.

You'll basically have your ignition signal coming from the DME, from pin #1. That needs to go to your ICM. From the ICM, it'll go to the coil. Unsure about wire colors here. You'll also need to figure out ground. Do you have a pinout for the ICM? You probably need a 12v reference voltage, maybe that's what the red wire is for.

I have 2 ICMs from a 928S, let me know if you want one for cheap. I believe it's the same part as the 944S.

If you want to remove the ICM, go standalone you can delete the DME and AFM while you're in there.

Hi there, the following diagrams should help:

I split it into two parts so they appear larger - hope it all makes sense to you. As stated you will need the ICM. I gather you are using the 16V ECU (DME unit), as the 8V one will not work.

If you need any further wiring info, let me know.

BTW, the ICM is mounted on the inner wheel arch just behind the driver side headlight, it has a small cable harness that joins into the main engine bay wiring. I assisted in the wiring-up of a 16V into and 8V 944 a while back, and have a 16V S at the moment, so have some experience.

When you wire up the ICM, you should use a shielded cable as shown on the diagram, failure to do that would prove problematic due to unwanted electrical noise causing poor running.

Good luck!

Yes, I've got the complete 944S engine harness, DME, AFM, etc. I might actually have the ICM somewhere, will have to double-check my boxes of parts.

Where does the ICM connect up to the main engine harness?

The ICM doesn't connect into the main engine harness. As mentioned, it is mounted on the side of the engine bay, the wires to/from it go into the engine bay harness that runs around the chassis and then up to the connector to the DME and over to the coil. The 'engine harness' is separate from that and connects to the engine components (injectors, knock sensors, temp sensors, etc.). Apart from the connector that plugs into the ICM, there are no further connectors involved. The engine bay harness also carries the lighting and other circuits, so unless you removed all of that from the donor car, you probably don't have the connector required.

Sounds like I need a connector. I can't find the part so I'll need to buy one. Anyone have the wiring as well?

Wiring question

Hello,
In his post Porschenut asked ' Pin 12 on the 944S connector is a red 12v line from fuse #7. Pin 7 on the 924S is a red/black 12v line from the ignition switch. Do these go together?' I have the same question. Does anyone have the answer?
