I used to get it with my old tires... New tires fixed it. What are you using for rubber?

Wheel hop? If I understand this correctly it only happens during hard launches? My turbo suffers this to some extent, but it's not bad once out of 1st. It's caused by looseness in the rear suspension, more specifically stub axles, cv joints, and output shafts on the transaxle. Shocks may help to a degree, but they won't cause it.

For your transaxle's sake, I hope your car has the rubber-centered clutch. That way the clutch center will grenade before the transmission.
Seriously, Porsche transmissions during the 1970's and 1980's are definitely not known for tolerating severe launches and shifts well at all. 914's have been known to shear off first gear, 924's/944's/924S's have been known to blow synchros. Bottom line, go gentle on that transaxle, the car is built for touring, not for acceleration runs. If you want to drag race, get a pony-car, it will be both faster and more reliable. Aaron

TIRES ARE CHEESEY. NO SPEED RATING ON THEM THAT I CAN FIND LOW BUDGIT BRIDGESTONS THAT CAME ON THE CAR WHEN I GOT IT I,LL LOOK INTO SHOCKS&STRUTS ANY TIPS ON SOMETHING BETTER THAN STOCK? BEEN WORKING ON CARS FOR 14 YEARS FOR A LIVING BUT THIS IS MY FIRST PORSCHE THAT I,VE GOT TO PLAY WITH |

YES THE 944 TURBO TRANSAXLES ARE IMPROVED, AND ONE WILL BOLT UP TO YOUR CAR FINE, NO MODS NECESSARY. THEY DO RUN A LITTLE PRICY NOWADAYS.

AND I KEEP SAYING SHOCKS WON'T CAUSE WHEEL HOP, THEY MIGHT HELP DAMPEN IT, BUT NOT BY MUCH, IT'S BECAUSE OF THE PLAY IN THE REAR SUSPENSION, AND AS I SAID MAINLY IN THE REAR SUSPENSION, STUB AXLES, ETC.

Yes, the car is not that great in the rain if it has junky tires. Right now I'm running Bridgestone Potenza RE950's and they are absolutely amazing in the wet. They are very good in the dry too, not the best, but very good and the payoff in wet performance for a car I drive every day is more than worth it. The RE950's even pushed my little car through this past winter in Pittsburgh. Made it through 14+ inches of snow without much drama at all. (Though I topped out at 10 mph in the snow, so I wasn't exactly moving very quickly.) Aaron
