Tranny Whines in 3rd and 4th Gears
My transmission began whinning in 3rd and 4th gears at low speed and low acceleration rates. It is not much of a whine but it is there. There is no sound deadening or seat or anything in rear of my car.
Is this something I should be concerned about? The whine does not seem to be getting any worse. There is no oil leakage. I have the limited slip tranny. Car has 124K on it, has engine modifications, and has very good straight line speed. I do not abuse the drive train with clutch dumping or burnouts or anything of that nature. It does get run at full throttle at track events, however. The full throttle is in 3,4, and 5th gears. Isn't 4th a 1/1 ratio - should not whine then? |

It sounds like the the syncro in 3rd and 4th are starting to show signs of wear, especially with the sort of mileage that you are talking about.
i have a 924 with 245k on the clock, it whines the same as yours (and has done so for ages) i thrash the a** off it and it has not got worse. These are strong boxes that are built to take abuse, if you want to rebuild the box then i would advise specialists do the job for you, but expect $$$$ Good luck Doc |
