How to replace 86 turbo starter?????

When i turn the key it just buzzes or hums. The battery has power for the lights, windsheild wipers etc. Is this the starter? How hard is a starter to replace? can I replace just the solenoid? Cost? Thanks

I'm not exactly sure about the turbo, but if its like the NA, we had mine on the lift the other day and it looks like the starter would be pretty easy to change. As for the costs of a new one according to my pelican parts book a starter for a turbo is $389.00.

Thanks for your help dave. Does anyone know a site online where I could get some instructions on changing out an 86 turbo starter or solenoid?

Check with your local auto parts store. The starter may match up part numbers from other vehicles for a fraction of the cost.(VW, AUDI, Ford Escort)there is nothing magic about starters unless its for a Diesel engine. Take a look, removal and replacement should be easy with bit of mechanical expertice, two bolts and two wires.(disconnect the battery first!).

If you are going for a "none Porsche starter", make sure it is rotating in the right direction.
I bought a broken one to use as a fly wheel lock (after some modification) and it is looking just as the original
starter but it is rotating in the opposite direction. (you see it on the wear of the gear wheel)

Replacing the starter on the 944 NA is esay, don't know about the turbo.

check and make sure that you are getting 12 volts at the starter. alot of times the ground wire will corrode and the car will not start.also, the 944 n/a starter will work on a 944 turbo. it is a little larger and heavier but also cheaper and more accesible used. the removal is very easy, 2 19mm bolts hold the starter on and there is 1 8mm nut and 1 13mm nut holding the wires on, 10 minute job at best. good luck!

Audi starter that will fit it do rotate the other way. A friend of mine rebuilds starters and we looked in all his books and the 944 starter number wasn't used on any other car at all, just the 944. He told me that over half of the starters brought in to him to rebuild were fine. Bad battery, bad connection, etc was the problem. Take the battery to a auto parts store like Advance or one that will check batteries for you and check your cables and connections before you buy a starter. If it is the starter, take it to a shop u know and let them rebuild it, much cheaper than buying one.

just disconnect your battery, jack your car up (right), and and it's only a few bolts here and there. Don't worry, it's fairly simple once you've done it. Haynes manuals has projects like these, and they're cheap. Not real descriptive, but they steer you in the right direction.
As far as starters go, last year I replaced mine, and when looking for one($2-300...) I wasn't sure If i was going to need a solenoid too, so I thought I'd go to rebuilder (starter/alt) to have it checked. The guy said it was fine, and he could rebuild the starter for $30. WHOA! He didn't know what car it was from, so i told him. He said "Ya sure, but it's still just a Bosch starter." -Makes sense 'cause they don't rebuild the housing!!
Did my Altinater later for the same. Check you local rebuilder (don't say what its off of unless they ask- they might think it's worth more).
