removing cat

In the next week or so I will be removing my cat and I'm gonna put a straight pipe in place of it, but I'm still going through the muffler. Is it going to be louder?? Will I see a power increase??

Any tips or advice????

Dave

thanks Shaun, Thats what I was hoping. I didn't want it to sound like a riceburner, but I did want that kinda low turbo tone.

in my car i found that the straight pipe made the inside much quieter. i figure that there was MUCH less turbulence with the straight pipe than with the catalyst, and that was the main reason.

thanks Obin, It makes sence that the cabin would have less noise. The main reason I going to change is because the cat is wore out and makes an embarissing rattle.

It looks like taking the cat off a na944 is pretty straightforward. What about the turbo? There is the regular cat and is there another small one coming from the turbo wastegate? Has anyone taken it off the turbo? What all was involved?

Good power difference with a turbo. It is also slightly louder with a turbo but not much. Have no numbers, but it is apparent.

What all is involved in talking it off on the turbo? What about the other little cat from the wastegate or somewhere that I have heard about?

T86952- If your not going to buy a separate test pipe I wouldn't worry about messing with the little wastegate cat. Think about it, it is only going to be a restriction when your wastegate is letting gas bypass the turbo. If you have something like the lindsey boost enhancer, your wastegate won't even open until you are at your full boost. Also, since there will be less restriction in the big pipe than there use to be, it might cause a tiny bit more gas to go through the turbo when the wastegate is slightly open (the equilibrium would be shifted). I doubt this extra gas would be measurable however. It would probably be a VERY tiny increase.

SHAUN- Since you say that removing the cat goves the car a turbo-sound, since my car is already a turbo, will it sound like a twin-turbo?

I just sold my 1985.5 944 and had the flow thru Bursch and straight cat on it for a short time. Its available if anyone wants to purchase it. Its in like new conditon and just hanging up on my garage wall. I purchased a 911 recently. One thing is critical is the gaskets in between have to be purchased separately ( I have an extra set as well). It did improve perfoemance and sounded more like a dragster then a sports car. E-mail me at rrose@omegasysinc.com if interested.

Thanks
Bob
