968 Variocam issues
Hi all, I'm rebuilding an engine from a burnt out 968 to put in my 944 Turbo and I am about 90% done but I think I'm having trouble with the timing chain tensioner when I'm trying to set the timing, I was thinking I might try replacing the variocam tensioner with one from a 944S2, does anyone know if they swap out directly or are there other options?
any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks, |
Probably not a good idea. Do you have the factory workshop manual for the 968. IIRC, you have to pressurize the variocam tensioner with compressed air while setting the timing.

I would check the Porsche parts PET and compare the part numbers.

You'd at least have to put in the S2 cams and cam cover, assuming the tensioner fit.
You can reasonably set the cam timing by matching where it was set before and it'll run fine, or check the exhaust cam timing with a dial indicator and don't freak out about the intake cam timing. It shifts as the pads and chain wear anyway. |
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the advice. I do have the workshop manual, or at least a downloaded copy of it and I did try to pressurize the tensioner, I'm going to have another try this weekend after reassembling the head just to make sure I got it all together correctly.
