924/Jetta engine
I was doing some research prior to digging into a 2 liter Jetta, and the manual describes the engine in gory detail. It was interesting to note that the displacement is exactly the same as the 924 Audi based engine, as were the bore and stroke. Now the Jetta has a twin cam head, but even down to the timing belt and cover, there is a marked resembelance between the two. I haven't had the car dropped off yet today, but I was wondering am I going to see an "old friend" re: the basic block of a 924 when I open the hood? Even the fuel delivery system calls for the same sensors/adjustments.

Better yet, can we put a jetta head in our 924s to get the twin cam action?

The only engine comonality that I have heard of was with the Audi 100, maybe there are more?
Some parts are also common to a VW Vanagon.

My mechanical knowledge is limited, but unless I'm crazy the Audi 100 had a 5 cylinder engine (until the 2.8 v-6), and I don't know how much of that is common with the 924 4 cylinder. If the 5 cyl engine could bolt in, go for it, its a great engine. Only car I ever drove that never used a single drop of oil between changes. Better yet, go for the turbo 5 and then things would be interesing

I mean the old Audi 100LS, not the Audi 5000 as it was known in the States.

According the 924.org, the old Audi 5 will bolt directly into a 924 in place of the 2 liter, increasing displacement to 2.3. There are pictures of just such a transplant there. The question is about the VW in line 4 with 2.0 liter displacement and whether the "lower end" is the same block as the Audi based 924 engine. I have made inquiries to the 924.org board and received my own mail back. (no response)

The 924 Audi 2 liter does not have anything in common with the other VW/Audi motors, as far as I know. I asked a VW performance place about some rod bolts or rods. No interchanging. One thing that is the same is the cam gear.
