Hello,
Don't know what happened but I'll shot you my problem again. I'm in the process of rebuilding an 87 924S and the A/C compressor is not working properly. The previous owner has a toggle swith run from the dash directly to it. He told me that this was OK to do but I'm not sure. I live in hot and humid central FL where the A/C is used about 355 day a year. What would be the first path to take with regards to finding the problem? Thanks for running me down!! Steve E

The system is not working probably because the refrigerant pressure in the system is low or the clutch is not working or a fuse has blown.
1. Check to see if fuse has blown. If it has, replace it and try it again. Generally if the fuse continues to blow, you have a clutch problem. That will be discussed below. 2. There is a pressure switch in the system located on the receiver/dryer. It should have two leads on it. Pull the leads off the switch and connect them together with some sort of conductor. Now turn on the AC. If it comes on your problem is low refrigerant. Do not run it long this way because the lubricant is carried by the freon. If there is no freon, you will ruin your compressor. You can tell if the compressor is running by looking at the end of it. If the hub turns, the clutch is engaged. If not, then only the pulley is turning doing nothing. 3. Another problem that happens is the clutch gets shorted out and blows fuses. The clutch is a big electromagnet. It has fine windings that are insulated by some sort of shellac. Because the wires are small and quite long, it offers a fair amount of resistance. In time, the insulation breaks down which effectively shortens the winding. That causes it to draw more current which blows fuses. The clutches can be rebuilt. If you have a multimeter, check the resistance of the clutch. It should be between 3-5 ohms. If it is less, it draws too much current and will blow the fuse. 4. If you are low on freon, you may have a leak. It'll have to sniffed out. What I have said applies to a 951, but I suspect it'll apply to yours. What I'm guessing as is the location of your pressure switch.
