Idle Advance

Hey, this is my first time posting on this message board. Just for the record, I own a early 85 944. Now on to my question. When my car is idling, even when it is warmed up, it is super rough. It pretty much shakes the whole car, so i'm assuming that my idle is too slow. The Haynes manual says that you should have a professional look at it, but i was wondering if it was possible for me to advance it myself. Could anyone help me with this, and if it is possible... How hard is it?
Thanks, James

it could be your motor mounts, my car used to shake like crazy at idle and it would go away at higher rpm's, for me it was the motor mounts

What does the car idle at? if it is 900 or above, check your motor mounts. if they are bad, it can feel like the car is going to shake itself apart.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. But this brings me to another problem. I can't see what my car idles at because my tach is kinda broken. If it is really, really, cold outside then it works. Or if it gets hot, it works then also. But just cruising around town at normal temp, it doesn't work. Any clue as to what the problem could be?
James
P.S. I've also noticed it works in heavy rain! very odd

I had a intermittent prob with my tach too.... well what i did was either trip the trip-o-meter(when it reset the # things it created a vibration and usually it would jump start the tach... much better than hitting the dash each time i got in the car.....(but i wouldnt reccomend doing this while the car is moving because appearently this will damage your trip-o-meter/Odometer) good luck.. laters....

Alright guys, thanks for all your help. My tach started working for a few minutes the other day, and i found that my car idles at 900RPMs. It's still shaking like crazy, and i don't know what i'm gonna do about it. I guess i'll just live with it for now. Although my 0-60 times seem to be affected by this problem because when you stab down on the gas it bogs down for a second and then goes. Oh well...... Thanks again.

wow so odd, my old tach had that same problem, worked in the rain and cold sometimes, and never worked for very long at a time. BUY A USED ONE!!!!! I waited and didnt because i thought it would be expensive. I got one from Flormat on this board for really cheap and it works great. Ebay has them a lot and they go for very little, usually around 10$, (i have an early car too)

Did you by chance check the balance shaft timing? Or maybe if you changed timing belts recently, it's off a tooth?
