Find me a 951-$100 reward

it's real simple. i'm looking for a 951, 1986-1989 and am keeping my purchase budget to $11,000. my sources are autotrader, recycler, yahoo & local newspapers (bay area, california).

if anyone can get me on a lead of a car from a source OTHER THAN THESE which i eventually purchase, you get $100 finder's fee.

I follow the market around Atlanta, and northern Miami pretty often.

If you don't mind getting a car from around the east coast, I'll let you know.

BTW, nice to see you back in the 944 crowd,
Ahmet

You didn't say Excite Classified, which is where I found my 951. You see the red/lt gray, 85k, 993 wheels, new Sumitomo HTRZII, Stage II chips,,,,$11,250. Here is the link or two....

thx ahmet.

montess, it looks like you have a nice car, but it's a little too much for an '86, for me anyways. but if it's in real good condition, you may be able to get close to your asking price. and as i didn't mention excite, i'll give you $100 if you refer me to a car i buy from there.

ahmet, getting back to you, i'm wondering about cross-country transport. it's not cheap. i bought my rx7 during my christmas trip to seattle last year and it cost $500 to transport it 850 miles back to san jose. i wonder what it would be from georgia, for example. maybe like $1000-1200. that may cancel out any savings from buying out-of-state. any ideas?

Blackfoot,

That is not my car, I have an 87 blk/ltgray 951. The 86 is for sale but is on the high side for an 86,,,,he does say OBO,,,transport cost; I purchased my car in Vegas, wanted it shipped to AR. and DAS said $900. I flew to Vegas on a reward ticket from Southwest, paid for the car and drove 19hrs home(1452 miles).

I know it's 3000 miles away, but you might be able to get a good deal and arrange shipping. This is where I bought my 73k miles 1984 na. They were asking $8,200 and I bought it for $6,500. They're very particular about their cars and repaired everything I aksed them to for 30 days after purchase. It ended up needing new oil cooler seals, thermofan switch, rear backup light switch, new tach, new wiper washer motor, new wiring harness/plug for the pop up headlights, and new A/C compressor (even though the original compressor was still working, they volunteered to replace it because it sounded clunky and looked leaky). The $6,500 included all these repairs and they guaranteed it would pass NJ inspection, which it did.

They're asking $13,100 for the 951, but I'd imagine they'll settle for closer to 10k-11k, given my bargaining experience.

If you don't like any of their current offerings, they'll find any car for you within reason. Tell them model, year, approx. miles, options, and price you want to pay, and they'll find you the car. They require that you sign a pledge before they actually purchase it for you, that you'll definitely buy it if it's reasonably close to what you asked for.

Good luck.

I think there's a great selection in Atlanta, and specially so in Miami. I'll keep my eyes open, you can decide if the transport, and the trouble would be worth it for yourself.

If you just fly there, and drive the car back (assuming the car is mint, and you don't mind driving that long, and don't need the time it would waste you) it could work out, but again, that's your personal choice.

Good luck on your quest to a perfect Porsche 951.
Ahmet

If you fly to another state, how can you drive it back home right away? I mean you can't register it that quick and get insurance and a license plate can you, without even being home to do that?

Blackfoot,

Dang, I just looked at a metalic green '86 w/ a rebuilt '87 motor in it last month. It eventually sold for $8600 I think.

So what up with the GSR?

harp, it's no biggie to drive a car you have just purchased if it's not registered. the important thing is to phone in the vin# into your insurance co. so that you're covered.

oregon, i was thinking of you as i passed the corvallis/lebannon 228 exit off the 5 at christmastime!. the gsr is history. sold it for $13.5k (after purchasing it for 12.5k 5 months previous) and miss it a little, but am looking forward to getting a german car again. just am finding that i love my bimmer more and more and miss my 951 a bunch. feel free to tell me about any 951's you see that are in a selling condition.

Any luck yet Blackfoot? If I were to go ahead and drop 12 grand into a car I might actually reconsider and hold out for a few more months and get a 968

thanks for all the leads guys. i've decided to only search locally as getting a car from outside my area entails a lot of extra details & hassles that i'm realizing i'm not willing to accept.

i'm also still thinking of a 911...
