Seriously down from reading Excellence....
I just got done reading the 'market update' in this month's Excellence and the '78 924 that I've restored, repainted and sunk $5,500 total into is worth......$2,276 to $3,047! Like a punch in the face, this has taken me down quite a bit. How do you guys keep going? More important...How do you justify to your WIVES the amount of money you've sunk into one of these things?

Everyone needs a hobby. Some have fishing as a hobby and spend thousands on fishing poles and boats. I'm a beginning woodworker and have spent several thousand on a small shop and some nice tools and am saving up for a table saw that costs between $6-15K depending on what options I get and may require having the power company bring in 3phase power so I can plug it in. If you look at it like it was a buissnes there is no way for me to justifey the expense of that table saw. If you look at it as a hobby that makes you happy then that is justification enough.

On paper it is that much and that's where it ends. Right now, my girlfriend wants a ring. But she's gonna have to wait as a clutch job on mine hols more importance!(kidding)
Remember that the car is worth MUCH more to you out of sheer enjoyment/pride of ownership. Isn't that all that matters? |

Same with me. It's a hobby so I don't really try to justify it...just control it. Some of things I feel better about because I use a "what-if" comparison... for example.. When I do my own brakes for $350 rather than the $600 it would have cost to have it done... that type of thing. So the extra money that I spend is somewhat balanced out by the money I save on DIY projects.
It's important to make sure your wife picks up a nice expensive also...that always helps ![]() ------------------ Chris 90 944 S2 Cab, Guards Red |

$350, and that's parts only?
What do you do, get them custom made by Porsche engineers? Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

It's a hobby. This doesn't just apply to 924's. If you read any Porsche mag's you will see that even 911 get work done that costs more than the value of the car. This goes for most any car for that matter. I look at it as a learning experience and fun. I usually put more into cars than they are worth, partly because I can't afford a ner perfect example to begin with. (and I don't want payments either) I would suggest not to tell anyone about it. Once, I added all the receipts for a 924 that I had and over the 8 years i owned it I put $7000 into it. Far more than it's value. But like I said, it's a hobby.

At least my 924 retains it's value. I gotta believe as they get older, fewer will exist, and they will increase in value. On the other hand, my 1998 Blazer LT that cost 32k new 2 years ago has a lease residual of 23k and they are selling for 17k on chevy lots right now. So which car's value sucks - the new chevy does....

I don't follow 924's too close, but 944 values are starting to slowly rise. Don't get down, they are going back up.

I think they'll keep going up, I don't see why not, 944s are good cars.
924 values have been in slow rise too, but only early ones, just because the prices dropped to less than $2k (a shame). The 924 is much better than another car you can get for the money, now that I think about it, so is a 944, definately a 944 turbo, or 968. Hmm, so is the 996 twin turbo! I think the thing we love about the Porsches is the "feelings they evoke" when driven hard. (Some people like cruizing in them, they look good, sound good, are responsive, so why not?) As for the wife, like CKROUGH said, just make sure she gets some expensive stuff as well.

If your wife is anything like mine, just pop out the sunroof on a nice, sunny, fall day, and go for a cruise down a back road. Especially through a state park, or someplace with a lot of beautiful scenery.
Mine thought the 944 was a "nice" car when we met, but she just didn't get the idea behind owning a Porsche. Then we took a slow cruise through one of the state parks, with everyone looking, and giving the thumbs up, and now she understands. Thank God she can't drive a stick! |

I think my woman finally realized what my Porsche was when I pulled up to a Mazda Miata with the NOS/racing stickers all over it. I looked over at him and gave a "nod up" "you want a peice of this" gesture and he shook his head rather quickly, he had his woman with him as well. Than, I think she put it together.
