urgent: need help with gearbox swap info.
I found a 951 gear box locally with 90K miles for $950, no warranty. The car just got side swiped and the tranny is the only thing left on the wreck. The driver was 36 and hopefully not a crazy driver.
I have a 1987na. Will it the 951 fit? The guy said it would. Does it sound like a decent deal? I also found someone to buy my old core for 400! so if this works out ive got a 951 gear box for only $550. i just hope the thing is worth a crap. cross your fingers |

It'll fit though I really cannot recommend this transaxle for your application, as it will effectively slow your car down pretty good. (through gearing, it'll decrease your torque to the rear wheels).

is it really even noticable?
(or is it like when you have the oil in your gear box and its so heavy you can't lift it?) |

your car will probably feel noticably slower - good point Ahmet. Nice comment Shaun...LOL.
If you have "cartest" you can compare (I did it and it looks like you'll lose about a 1/2 second in the 1/4 mile). Erick [This message has been edited by wolfrpi (edited 02-11-2001).] |

(rpi = rennselear polytechnic institute? if so, cool.) im not a dragracer. is this really noticable? supposedly the 951 tranni is much beefier and less likely to crap out, which i dont EVER want to have to deal with AGAIN! i looked in the transmission charts in the back of my owners manual and it looks like for any given speed you are approximately 500rpm lower on the tack with the 951. is that what you calculate? thanks |

The 951 gearbox is stronger than the 944 gearbox, but the ratios in the lower gears are not good for the na. You might consider getting a 951 gearbox and replacing the ring and pinion with one from an S2, although that would probably be fairly expensive.

Oh yeah, there's a brand new 944na LSD transaxle on eBay right now. Bidding is up to $1525. Kind of expensive, but it is brand new in the original Porsche box instead of used or rebuilt.
