1988 944S - Reference Mark/Speed Sensors

My 1988 944S needs a new clutch. We also noticed that it has two sensors siliconed in place to read the rotation of the flywheel. One has been in contact with the teeth of the starter ring.
My understanding is that the 1988 944S only needs one sensor to read the rotation of the special timing ring attached to the flywheel.
Has anyone seen a 944S with two sensors and have any idea why two may be required. I haven't checked the DME yet to make sure it is the proper one for the car and has not been modified.

Thanks,
Gord
