Porsche Crest Hey all you mechanics, fantasy maximum 944 N/A engine!

Let's start with: THIS IS COMPLETELY THEORETICAL, so don't tell me to go out and buy a turbo.
Just as an engineering challenge/project.
Working with a 1984 2.5L block and no forced induction - can be driven on the street (Calif. emissions)
I will start with (is this even possible?) a 3.0 crank to stroke it to 2.7
High compression pistons (10:1?) how high can you go on street gas?
Intake and electronics off a 1986 or later 944 (plus Wilks chip).
Bored throttle body.
MSD ignition.
Can it be done?

what would you add or take away from that list?

Comments? condemnation? confusion? conundrums?

TIA

the 3.0 crank will cost over a grand then you need to get the block machined but, yes it has been done

11:5 custom pistons are possible and with the 3.0 crank you'll probably need the custom pistons since the wrist pin locations on the 3.0 are different

88 na's are 10.2:1 and i would stick to somewhere around 11:1

-for California 91 anyway.

besides ive been told (don't know if its true) that doing anything to your engine in CA even if it dosent pollute more can fail the somg test. Like a K&N on an obd2 car.

Web Cam will give you a mild street grind cam for $450 (10-12 hp).

Mass air conversion available for $700 (10-12 hp).

Hi Flow Cat replacement $250 (unknown HP, but much better sound).

Custom Chip $300 (again 10-12 HP).

Adjustible Fuel Pressure meter and guage. (5-6 hp).

Head port & polish $3-400 (5-6 hp).

Don't know if these items would be additive in their HP (Use the formula.... more air + more fuel = more HP).

Im not sure about running a 11.1 compression ration on street gas, You may run into some problems. As far as the 2.7 do it. Then get the head work done, cam, mass air flow, chip and I think huntley racing has a larger intake and exhaust valve conversion for the 944/924 head. The biggest problem with the 2.5 liter engine is lack of air flow. SO like kirby said More air+more fule= more HP. So whatever you do make sure that 2.7 liter can take in all the air and fuel it needs and you will notice a huge difference in power. Also I would get the engine balanced and any parts that you can lightened, also get a good clutch and if you really wanna get crazy get a lighter flywheel. That engine would kick some ass if you did all this. Good luck

Scott, if you read the reply about your idea on the crank thread, I like highboost's idea about increasing displacement by increasing the bore. That should make it a more rev-happy design than stroking the 2.5 (makes more $ sense if you need custom pistons with the 3.0 crank). I would also think that increasing the displacement and the compression (watch your emissions here) would make the benefits of a better cam grind more pronounced. Might make enough extra hp to approach being worth that $450.

California has new NO2 standards that KILL high compression dead! It's only a matter of time for other states. With NO2 there is no easy fix: too lean = more NO2, too rich = higher CO. NO2 can't be tuned out with better ignition.

This is all pie in the sky dreamy talk...

But IIRC Excellence did an article where someone dropped a S2 into a early 944, maybe more cost effective to find a rolled S2.
Or buy a good condition S2 in the first place!

Get some custom titanium connecting rods, shave the cylinder head to raise compression that way you wont' have to make the piston's heavier. Get some stronger valve springs. knife edge that crank. Port and polish.
If you were to build that motor it would be nice. But the California smog patrol will kill you.

Lets say we raise compression to the 10.2:1 using euro pistons, then we knife edge the crank, decent cam.
Lindsey has a P/P that raises head flow by almost 40%... Use this with a new intake manifold, MAF

This is my plan... it'll probably only take a few years lol

I'm agree with scottmandue

yesterday solds on ebay a complete s2 engine with motronic and harness at 1300 usd.

You easily will spend a lot more and you never will have the hp and torque of this engine

My engine is ok, but I'm thinking in this upgrade, my car is auto, I will need torque!!!!!!

My 85.5 is running almost 11.0 to 1 compression and I would not go any higher for the street. The cheapest way to go would be to get a set of 88 pistons and then have the head milled. Depending on the cam you use you can get the compression up to between 10.5 to 11 to 1.

Justin, you should just swap in the 928 engine in your 944 and your 944 engine in your 928.

do any aftermarket tuners offer a lightweight flywheel? under drive pullies? possible to change to a different differential? it seems as if there aren't that many bolt on options for the 944 compared to other cars.
