Power Steering Fluid Change and Bleeding

My power steering fluid is old and kind of funky (frozen) in cold weather. I'm going to change it. Can any of you tell me the procedure? Or where can I find the procedure?
- How much fluid does the system use?
- How do I bleeding? Just turn wheel several time from lock to lock after add new fluid?

Thanks for helping.
Eugene

Hi Eugene, to replace the fluid jack the car up on jackstands you will also need about 2 quarts of new Dextron ATF fluid and also have a collection of new hose clamps as some of the old screw clamps might be tired.
under the car remove the hose that goes to the pump the one that has a hose clamp.
Then turn the wheels slowly back and forth a few times to get out the old fluid, remove the tank for the steering and flush it out to remove any of the old junk put it back in fill the system back up start the car in neutral with the brake on and let idle (still on the jack stands)and slowly turn the wheel back and forth to the stops (dont force the wheel at the stop this is how you blow out your rack by holding the wheel to the stops) do this turn thing about 10 times and then look into the tank and you will see what looks like purple beer it will be very foamy this is OK shut off the car and let it sit for a few mins get under the car and remove the power steering line again and let it drain turn the wheels back N forth by hand to get out any old fluid put the line on top it off and then do the 10 times back N forth with the engine running to bleed the system, look into the tank after the foam settles down and see if it looks purple or silvery if it is silvery then flush it again to put fresh fluid in to the system .....I hope this helps..........Stan

Rip the power steering thing out with some cutters and a couple good yanks, then basically convert your car into manual steering.
Don't need false feedback from the wheel, go olden, go muscle.

I found the Prestone Power Steering Fluid and Stop Leak at WalMart. I'm going to use it as my new power steering fluid because my rack has a little bit leaking.
Has anyone ever used this fluid? Good or bad?

Eugene, Porsch recommends Dextron for the power steering fluid, I know they make stuff called power steering fluid but i dont know how this will work so your on toyr own if the rack is leaking and your putting on a new pump then you might destroy the new pump as well as whats left of your rack if the rack is not in tip top shape IE the rack leaks and lets the pump run dry or the rack will contaminate your new pump ,, I would look into a rebuilt pwr steering rack that is if you want pwr steering otherwise remove your pwr steering belt and leave the rack as it is you will also need to drain the rack so you dont have fluid going back and forth in the lines .........Stan

Use only Dextron II or III ATF! My Porsche dealer has told me about people that skimp on the ATF, and the cheap stuff ends up causing any/all seals in these cars to fail. I wouldn't trust any stop leak stuff either, as this will most likely damage seals as well.

note: he was talking specifically about my auto trans, but I'd bet the same hold true for the steering.
