Carrera Gt Light Conversion
I want to do the light conversion to my 944, and I was wondering if anyone has done this or seen this done. Also, I know the kit is offered for $175 at gt-racing.com, but I want to know what is involved in this kit.
thanks, adrian. |

I assume you are talking about the 924 Carerra GT headlights.
I haven't done this yet myself (but I'm planning to). It should be fairly simple, you reomve all of the mechanical assemblies for the pop up lamps and then fix the Carerra GT headlight buckets in place, then mount the lights, hook them up and put the covers on. I know it won't be that simple, you'll probably have to remove the nose panel, and maybe do some light fabrication/modification but it can't be that complicated either. ------------------ The shortest distance between two points is in my car. |

Kobe,
Let us know how it goes. Us with 924s may have a problem with scarce motors in a few years. drew1 |

It's an early 85 944. Do you know if this kit includes the lights themselves or are those separate?

The $175 is just for the clear covers. The headlight buckets are another $112 or so, and does not include the actual lights.

The buckets would be what is needed, you could probly pick up some square lexan for the covers. I think I saw some rectangular high power bulbs in Performance Products.
I haven't seen but a couple of 924 Carerras but this looks like what they have. drew1 |

It would definately look cool. Are they legal for street use though?

Look at the AIR catalog as well. They have alot of 924/944 parts including the lights you want.

http://www.showcars-bodyparts.com/porsche.html is the web address for a site that has the AIR catalog online. I'm not sure if they are affiliated with AIR or not. As far as the headlights are concerned, it's something that I kinda want to do also (nothing like a few feet of ice and snow ontop of your car to realize that pop-up headlights should be replaced). Question is, will there be 24 inches from the ground to the middle of the headlight when it's in the bucket. If yes, then your ok, if no, you might get a ticket and a license plate suspension until you make your car conform to U.S. Law. All states support the federal minimum 24 inches. Many states have also placed 54 inches as the max height (as measured to the middle of the light), but there is no federal standard for max height and it'll vary from state to state.

Oooh, and yes I realize that I still need to clean them off (when covered with snow), just that I won't hear the motor clicking angryly when they are frozen down due to ice where I have to jump out, get out the scraper and "free" the headlights... Plus, I have a Wolf bra and I could just remove the headlight portion and then not have to get out and open the headlight section each time I put up the lights...

Thanks for the link, and good points. But, how many cops do you actually think will check for this measurement?

Well, I think it only takes one cop that you've pissed off over something or who is just having a bad day to ruin yours... Course, it took me a while to find that standard and they might not have any idea, but just the same, I'd rather not suffer thru a bunch of fines...
P.S. When my bearing went, I drove my 944 very slowly to the repair shop... I was stopped three times by police in different towns who I suspect were wondering why a Porsche was going by at 10mph in 35 to 45 zones.... |

I commented on this under the question about 924 turbo to 924 GTS. Check it out.

PST; Did you check with AIR for the buckets? I did some basic measurments and it looks like the lights MIGHT be 24 inches (I was only able to use my leg and then measure my leg, as due to all the snow in Chicago right now, I have the car at it's home away from home and didn't have a tape measure handy at the time). Anyways, I just got GT Racing's catalog in the mail and also have A.I.R.'s (who's link I posted earlier). Even some of the text is identical, so I wonder if they both use the same source (although when I spoke with A.I.R., the person claimed they used to make the parts for PNA Racing) for parts so if one is out of stock, the other would work just as well.

jwn, last time I talked to AIR they told me that they didn't have all of the parts available anymore. Where in the Chicago area do you live? I live in Glandale Heights (355 and North Avenue)?

Another thought. There are a few 924 GTS cars here in the US that are licensed and street driven. One is in Atlanta. (the GTS has these lights)

I'm in the far sw burbs near Lockport but commute up to Rolling Meadows each day. As I said before from my basic measurments, I think that the lights might be high enough to meet the 24 inch standard. I think I might go that route in a month or so myself.

Has anyone here actually done the headlight conversion yet? I found this kit at http://www.miata.org --
It's $395, but includes the actual headlamps and everything. I'm sure it could be made to fit the 944 without too much effort since the stock headlights on a miata are the same size as the ones on a 944 as far as I know. Of course, you'd still need to buy the GT Racing lexan covers to fit the 944. I also found a Xenon HID H4 conversion for $700. Not a bad price, but they're low beams only
