Need some quick help, car wont start

I am over at my friends house, I tried to leave and the car would not go.

car started alright, but would bog when I tried to give it gas and move. Then it would eventually not even start when I tried it

I then tried jumping the DME relay and that will allow the car to start and run, but, like before, when I gave it gas it will just bog down. It also runs pretty rough while it is running.

Any ideas on what to check?

Thanks

fuel? pressure?

afx 07-04-2003 08:10 AM

It seems like the fuel is coming, I can hear the pump come on when I jumper the fuel pump on. I can smell the fuel also.

I am wondering if it has to something to do with it being quite wet out.

cracked cap? look inside, alcohol wipe will dry it inside

afx 07-04-2003 08:57 AM

Cap looks alright. I am thinking that it may have something to do with the fuel. When I have been starting the car it will idle pretty well, (I just cant give it any gas or it will bog down) but when I just let it sit there and idle it will just slowly get worse and worse. Maybe it is just loosing the fuel pressure.

check tailpipe for obstruction, apple, oranges, especially if your friend is a new ladyfriend.

MrPants 07-04-2003 11:11 AM

can you describe what you mean by bog down?
is it stalling when you give it gas?

afx 07-04-2003 11:18 AM

Yes, it will just drop in the RPMs when I give it gas. It seems like when I open the throttle and let the air in, it just doesn't have enough fuel to sustain the idle?

I have just let it sit for about 2 hours. When I started it, it ran fine for about 2 minutes. I was able to drive it and everything, then it just started getting slowly worse over those 2 minutes, and I was unable to give it gas anymore.

fuel filter?

afx 07-04-2003 12:02 PM

Over on the other boards someone suggested that it could be the coil. I am going to try throwing a new one in and see if that helps out.

afx 07-04-2003 12:03 PM

I have also not changed the fuel filter and I do not know when that was last done, so I am sure that would be a good idea also.

carsontc 07-04-2003 12:07 PM

yeah...could be...

also, what happens if you disconnect the O2 sensor?

could be a temp sensor that thinks the engine is cold even when it's warmed up

wiggle the Thottle Position Switch and Air Flow Meter connections in case one has gone flakey...

check vacuum tubes and the big AFM boot to the intake in case of leaks

afx 07-04-2003 12:09 PM

The O2 sensor has been disconnected for a while (couple months) so I dont think that is it.

I will go out and try messing with the TPS and AFM connections

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 07-04-2003 12:25 PM

used any injector cleaner lately?

afx 07-04-2003 12:29 PM

No i have not. If the coil does not work I am going to have to get my car towed home. When I get it there, I will probably check everything over in the fuel system.

carsontc 07-04-2003 12:32 PM

doubt it's the coil

hmmm...why was the O2 disconnected?

Roger Hall 07-04-2003 01:52 PM

Is the car running rich? Black smoke comming from exhaust? Does the exhaust smell like gas?

afx 07-04-2003 02:41 PM

The O2 sensor was disconnected because it was not functioning correctly, it would cause the car to miss at abour 4000 Rpms while under partial throttle. I have a new one, I just need to put it in.

The car is runing a little bit rich, but no more than it usually did. It does not smell all the much like it is getting too much fuel.

I got a new coil, and still no go.

Heres a recap of where I am at:

When the DME realy is jumped the car will start and run, but it is pretty rough.

I can give it some gas and it will function normally for about 30 seconds, then it will start to get rough and bog when I press the gas and almost die.

After a bit (60 seconds or so) it the idle will get worse and worse till the car pretty much dies.

I was thinking the car was runnig rich. Try checking the air intake system.

I'm betting on the TPS...

btw...the O2 sensor you disconnected might have been masking the real problem
