re-carpeting my 944
I'm seriously considering re-carpeting my 944, and need some advice. There is a company, Stock Interiors (www.stockinteriors.com) that has an entire molded carpet set ready to go. Although the shape is molded to the contours of my car, there are two conditions that I'm concerned with. One is that the edges of the carpet are not bound and stitched; the sales rep assures me that he has never had a complaint of carpet edges fraying. The second is that the snap closures on the rear hatch carpet are not included. I would either have to remove the snap closures from the original carpet or try and purchase new snaps. Does anyone know where I could purchase replacement snap closures. I fear that I will damage the existing snaps if I try to remove them. Has anyone had any experience replacing carpet?

Hi,
i just re-carpeted my 83. the rear snaps are a "snap" to remove. use a small screwdriver and pull the tabs so that they can be removed from the carpet. the carpets did not have a bound edging because all of the carpet goes under trims or door seals. there would be no need for the edging. the seats are very easy to remove as are the seat belts. the job requires patience and a lot of bits and pieces and screws have to be removed. I REALLY enjoyed doing it because I could!! enjoy!

Thanks, but I have a problem. The snaps are not separate of the carpet. They are part of the carpet. Will I damage them if I take them off?
The other problem I have is that the sales rep said that I have to make all my cutouts for seat bolts, transmission hump, shifter. Is this something that you had to do?

i think tje thing sounds like a PIA but unless you get a carpet set out of a newer 944 or spend a LOT of money, there is no choice. i think that once you take out the old carpet and lay it on top of the new one, you can cut the holes for seat belts, etc. the snaps are removable. i removed mine and i think it would be the same with any of the 944 carpets. doing the job takes time but the results will be worth it, especially if you are trying to make it a beautiful and comfortable ride. they sell these carpets to the Do it yourself people. getting this done by a shop, i am guessing, could cost way over $1000. maybe $2000?
plan ahead after buying the carpet. see what goes where and you will succeed. ernest

I think that auto type carpet ins likely actually a plastic material and since it is not really a warp and weft like a rug, it also wont come unravelled. I dont think you cna pull a thread and see it unfrey like it could if it was a regular rug. becuae it is basically like coke bottles that are stretched int strands it wont absorb moisture like a woven rug can.
how about forget the snaps , and use velcro? just contact cenment it where needed instead? if you want snaps maybe try a leather supplier, some places tend to supply to arts and crafts inolving leather, horse tack may be related. people who work with vinyl boat tops use snaps. you might need a tool to install them , something like a little punch and a die or special plyers or similar. it might be a bit like a riveting operation. Id just use velcro. more forgiving , if the snaps aren't located just right it may cause issues, you can reposition velcro easily. Id use contact cement maybe some black thread to sew it on, if you like. |

It's pretty easy to find the type of snap in the rear carpet in black, just search for 3 prong snap. I continued looking until I found a silver version here:
https://www.jetpress.com/component-and-fastener-products/fasteners-and-components/fabric-fasteners-clothing-military-and-marine/dot-fasteners/carpet-fasteners-dot-fasteners I did not pursue pricing.

Can someone please post photos of an aftermarket carpet kit they have purchased. I would love to see anything similar to OEM.

maybe a place that sells fabric, sewing notions, they should have snaps or velcro.
I have some in my leather tools kit. I think there is a die to crimp them together. or similar. maybe you hit them with a hammer to drive the parts together and capture the carpet, or something like that. some have screws, like for attaching covers to boats. |
