Do these valves look bent to you?

F@#%^% 'in Exhaust manifold to cat bolts!!!!!!!
This whole valve thing has been pretty quick so far except for that
3 hours for the manif. and still one measly bolt remains.

Now, that is off my chest.

Hears the goods

all of you that said I bent 4 or more...well see for yourself...

Guess I shouldn'ta tried to crank her 8 or 9 times after she stopped

Hey interesting to note. The teeth were stripped from the crank only so no movement was occuring at the cam. Just looky at those intake valves.

The crap on those valves is, I believe, from a head gasket that was about to go......

Hey!!!!! The cup IS half full!!!

All In All I am happy to be doing this job. I have found many things that were hidden from site, needed replacing, cleaning or repairs. If all is done correctly I should have LOTS of peace of mind.

Cylinder 1 is at far right

Pics are of block opened like a box from pass to drivers side.

Head gasket (in situ) far right bottom bolt area is very crackly and krispy, like it is made of fried batter or something(for lack of a technical word)

The valves were bent before the engine stopped. Your cranking may have bent them a bit more.

Yeh,

I can't wait to make my "4 bent valve windchime" when they come back from the machine shop. Every P-garage needs one.

It's possible to have a bent valve, though it may not be noticable from a casual glance. The machine shop should tell you for certain.

All 4 of your intake valves are bent, exhausts are tough to call. I had bent all 4 of my exhaust valves without breaking a belt (but revving to 7200+ rpm often w/the old set-up) from valve float. The hydrolic lifters really don't like being revved past 7k or so, and the springs are certainly not stiff enough up there either, specially on the NA engine.

Congrats on getting it apart. You're right the exhaust is a real pain. From the looks of things you were about 15,000 miles late on disassembly.

Yes, you need intake valves. I would replace all the valves, guides, and seals. Take a good look at the head studs I see alot of rust on some and would replace those. Also have the shop replace the freeze plug on the front if it's even still there.

The pistons took a good punch and consult one the guru's here to see if necessary to replace. I would, but i'm anal.

You have a long road ahead grasshopper $$$$$. You will need to reseal the front of the engine, drop the pan and muck it out and clean the screen, etc. pull the cooler and clean and re-seal, Replace the water pump! You do not want to have to do it later after you put everything back together and it siezes. Replace cap and o-rings on injectors, etc.....

When all finished and she runs sweet you will have you're official 944 technical certification being there is no skin left on you're knuckles and the words you use the most start with an F.

And then somewhere in the distance you will hear a muffled scream as another kitten goes down and know that someone, somewhere is about to embark on an adventure of epic preportions from which you just returned.

Yep, replace the studs.

Replace the intake bolts w/stainless bolts and washers and all bolts up top and belt covers w/stainless as well.

Paint the cambox and head any color. I had some difficulty painting mine as the paint wouldn't stick due to magnesium content and it was too cold when I sprayed. redid it and looks ok I went with the rebuilders cast grey. I painted the intake w/aluminum coating and looks good. You will need to get the exh.man. blasted before painting/powder coating. Powder coat will last longer and not break down as header paint does. You can coat yourself with a kit and pop in your oven to cure.

Good Luck,

If you need anything (spanners, cheesehead sockets,etc..) just give a holler and I'll loan ya mine.

Rick

Man, Oh Man!

I just finished puting my engine back together (head gasket, 4 new exhaust valve guides, water pump, belts, water hoses, thermostat, yada, yada), and from the looks of your pistons you were on the verge of a head gasket failure.

Look at the lighter spots on the pistons (5 O'Clock on #2 and #3, and 7 O'Clock on #1, #3, and #4). Sure looks like coolant was hitting the pistons.

Did this car over heat before the timing belt broke?
