I have a few 1/18th scale models on my desk, and I would like to find a 944. I have tried a little snooping around on the internet, but to no avail. Anyone know of anyone who makes (or ever made) such a model??
Thanks,

hate to say it, but I've never seen any, and I've been looking for years. I'd really like to have a 951 in that scale. The only one I've been able to find is the 24th scale Hasegawa kit.

they don't exist. the 1/18th scale die-cast model didn't really gain any notice until the mid-1990s, and by then 944s were of little interest to car enthusiasts... that's why in stores you can only find 993-and later model 911 models. There is a company called Exoticar that deals in die-cast models, and through them many classic Porsches have been distrubuted. You can get everything from a 1/18 904 to a 914... but 924/944/968 cars aren't available yet. Since the 914 is a relatively new model in the diecast world, I wouldn't be too surprised to see a 944 scale model in the future.

yeah you can get 1/24 scale die cast 944 Turbos too... but 1/24 scales often look terrible... 1/18 is the best scale for a model, IMHO.

I like to collect models of all cars I've owned. Last Christmas my wife brought an el cheapo Matchbox knock-off set home to wrap for my 5 year old grandson.
Lo and behold, there was a 944 and a Mercur XR4Ti! Alex got substitutes for those, I kept 'em.

I once heard that there were factory scale models. These were given away when you bought a brand new 944. They were painted the same color as your actual car. I heard this was a very limited issue, and only available in Europe. Can anyone back this up? does anyone have one of these models?
It seems like there is interest in this group, is there any way we can make "requests" to Exoticar, to encourage them to produce a 944 model? |

exoticar doesn't actually produce the models, it distributes models by Bburago, et al... although that isn't to say that letters pouring in expressing interest in a 944 model wouldn't hurt...

I believe someone tried to submit a request a while ago and the cost of just starting production was astronomical...like a 250Gs....-chris

Yep, tool-up costs can be quite high. if the manufacturer thinks that he can't sell enough units, he won't make the run. On the other hand though, in the model industry, it is common for one company to buy another company's old molds. So if there were 944s produced in the past and the molds have not been destroyed yet, it is conceivable that someone could seek them out and make anoher run. Depending on demand, of course.

Hi guys. This is my first post here - I usually postwhore on rennlist and flat-6..
Anyways, There were never any 1:18 scale 924/944s built. Majorette made some 1:24 scale diecast coupes and cabs, and Hasegawa and Testors made 1:24 plastic model kits. There where quite a few hot wheels sized 944s - and there are also a bunch of 1:43 scale 944 models. The GOOD news, is that Minichamps.de WILL release a red, 924S this winter, in 1:18 diecast!!!! I recently wrote to minichamps in german, and got a response, after numerous english requests failed to yeild a response! Please view and sign the petition in my sig, as Minichamps is viewing it and using it for research to determine which models to tool in the near future!!!!! (ie. 944/951/968)

Revell Germany also did a 944 plastic kit. Man, I'd sure like to see a good 951 in die cast.

Yeah, the 1:24 metal kits are crap, and the plastic kits depend on your skill level... We will have a 1:18 minichamps 944/951 soon enough.. believe me!
BTW, nice car ronin - will you be coming up to Whistler on Aug 22,23,24? I know it's a 4 hour drive, but it'll be worth it. LOTS of Porsches on display parked throughout the village square! Sat = concours light and Sun = auto-x !!

That would be cool!! The drive doesn't bother me, it's beautiful. I haven't been up there with the p-car in quite a few years anyway. It's always been in the ruck to go skiing. Only thing is I have to check if the CART race in Denver is that weekend because a buddy of mine and I were going to go there.
