Are we all noticing the newcomers to the site lately?
The interesting thing is, I don't see the usual "junior member" next to the posts of most of these people. Are you guys coming back to these boards, after being inactive for a long time? Well, hope you like it and stay here! Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Yah, I noticed the same thing...kind of strange isn't it.
It says Junior Member until X amount of posts, so if it only said that for you for one day, you posted a lot of stuff that day. Maybe we ask to have the message limit of J.M.'s upped ![]() |

I'm a student, planning to go to (mechanical engineering) North Carolina State University in two semesters. (I'm taking 6 months off)
I turn 19 early next month... I've been interested in cars for a long time, in the last year I started doing more and more research about suspension designs/geometry, chasis designs, car dynamics, effects of weight distribution, etc. However recently I started getting interested in electronic engine management systems (I just ordered $300+ worth of Bosch engineering/design books today!), etc. I think I'm approaching $2k in books now! I used to be into computers/electronics 4-5 years ago. Lots have changed, but I think I'm gonna start keeping up with them again. I've had my car approaching 2.5 years now, have been auto-xing it for about a year. Got 2nd place in regional finals last year (in the Carolinas, C-stock). I've worked at a Porsche specialty shop, as a mechanic, worked at a tire store, at a body shop, etc. Currently I don't have a job, because I lost my driver's license (have about 5.5-6 months to go). Well, I'm active in many other things besides cars (Porsches really, I'm only lightly interested in anything besides Porsches, and German cars in general) such as acting, mountain biking, sailing, beach volley, etc. I don't want to bore you, bottom line is I love these cars, and am passionate about them. PS: English is my 3rd language, so excuse the occasional mistake I may make. Welcome to the board. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Maybe I should add, I've been in the States for a tad less than 4 years. I'm originally from Turkey.
I've been to a few countries in europe, but haven't stayed anywhere for a long time, besides Turkey, and States. It's possible that I'll be moving to Norway mid next year, but by no means is it a certainty. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Ahmet...from your posts I've seen over the last 3 months, you seem to have an affinity
for things mechanical, if you do as you say, and you're certainly enthusiastic. Go get the BSME from NC State; combine your passion & savvy and enrich the technology in whatever discipline "grabs" you.One of my(EE)engineers was a Turk, Altan Turel; very sharp. Maybe you can fill his shoes. Lord knows we'll need good tech-no-rats; some of the latest ones don't seem to know there are left and right threads; etc; etc. |

Uh, the mechanical engineers my dad talks to at work, they discuss where they get their oil changed (ie. in depth conversations about lubex joints)....oh well.
I guess the point is mech engineering has nothing to do with cars, prepare yourself. And ya won't have time to work on them or auto-x until your 55 and you retire, and you have so little energy left that you won't want to. Do it while ya can. I want to do what I enjoy, money isn't everything! It's true that this career won't be the highest paying job, but you never know.
My step brother works for nasa (you guessed it, mechanical engineer), he's living pretty well I'd say. HE doesn't like his job that much though... We're all different people. AMC, I personally enjoy in-dept conversations about everyday things that normal people don't care/think about. Have you ever thought about how a thick glass gets stressed more at it's skin, in comparison to a thin one, when heated/cooled? Would you want to discuss why? Well, I would... Well ya, that sounds interesting...those ARE the things you learn, but not what you do at your job man...unless you find some job, like those guys that analyze F1 engines and go through every thing the driver did inside the engine room
but most mech engineers i have seen do boring stuff like check drawings and sit on a computer all day and stuff, they don't actaully do any mechanical work or anything! I been to my dads work! He a mech engineer! Just find a job that actually does cool stuff, don't get stuck with a computer job eh ![]() |

Hey.. nothing wrong with a computer job. Computers are used to design the very toys we all enjoy playing with. Most of the careers pay quite well and as a result, you can have more and better toys that the average joe. The secret is chosing the right postion and firm and deciding for yourself when its time to go home to the family and your toys. (AMCPorsche924Powerhaus) Sounds like you are not to happy with your work or are just jellous that the kid has a shot at a better opportunity. I know in my heart he will make the right choice for himself... Now if only we could get him to quit smoking.

Single white male, looking for single white female who likes long walks on the beach... oh, crap this isn't the personal ads!!
Hey all, I'm a relatively new Porsche owner my self, going on 4 months... it's been a touch relationshipe but she treats me well... anyways she's an early 85 944 and came in a beautiful body 36 24 36.... but she needs some tuning under her hood. I started working on her alot and have done some minor jobs, engine mounts, plugs, etc... and I enjoy it. The reason I work on cars is so that I'll know enough not to get ripped off and to save some cash. I love this BBS and it's very helpful...thx to such intuitive people as Ahmet, Cus, Hoff, and others.... I definately like Ahment's view on life...money's not the key in life, happiness is...so do what you like whether it's scooping horse crap off the road for $10.50 an hour (true) or enjoying the physics of cars...it's all good. Thx to all for the help on the problems I've posted. Brandon85-944 |

Yo
Been here for a while myself, posted a couple of questions but didn't get much response. I thought it was you guys being stuck up to the newbies or something like that. I guess maybe my questions were not challenging enough or some thing. Then I thought it might be where I live, but then there is atleast one other in central alberta and he speaks volumes. Any how I have a 1980 931 and am rebuilding it. Trying to stay as close to stock as possible but some parts are just tooooo expensive and hard to find. Just picked up a 1980 924 in a lovely gaurds red that I think I will part out. |

Hey guys...I'm new to this board, but some of you know me from the old excite days, or the MSN/944 World site...I've only had my '83 944 for 9 months, but have gained alot of experience from it...One, because it needed alot of work when I got it..and Two, because I do ALOT of research...I have taken it from a basket case, to a daily driver/auto-x competitor, and am truly in love with this car...I grin from ear to ear when I drive it!...I think it's great that you guys in your teens own and enjoy these cars...When I was your age, affordable cars didn't have this much going for them...They were all about 4 barrell carbs and speed, but they weren't this much fun to drive!!...I'm a 36 year old "kid"...I live on the beach, surf, I used to race mountain bikes-but now do alot of road cycling...I'm currently training for the "Cross-Florida" ride in May...170 miles coast to coast in one day....I did it last year...It's as much of a mental challenge as physical...Oh...and YES, I have a DO have a career! I clothe the best dressed guys in the U.S..from some of the most renowned businessmen in the country, to politicians, celebrities and professional athletes.I am also the Director of Marketing and Advertising for our stores...anyway...You guys are awesome...keep the discussions going...I really like this group and the activity level...Later...
