Question Would you be interested a '85-up vinyl dash recovering FAQ???

Hi all,

As some here might know, I recovered my dash (See pic's here) in my '85.5 with vinyl, and it came out excellent. I get many complements (when I tell them I re-covered it, as you can't really tell).

Now the thing is I had my windshield out, which made the project much easier. I *think* it could be done with the windshield in, and I posted some of my thoughts on this here at the end of the thread.

If anyone is interested, I am willing to write up a how-to, but you must realise IF IT GOES WRONG, YOU ARE LIVING WITH A CARPET OR PLASIC CAP DASH COVER for the rest of your days!!

I would be interested in trying it on a car with the windshield in, and if anyone wanted to travel up to Burlington, Vermont and have a go at it we could write the FAQ around the experience BUT I COULD NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING GOING WRONG!!!!!!!

It just seems that, with the dash being such a problem in these cars, it might be worth a shot....

look at the two links, and let me know what you think.

Pleaaassseee post a faq. That would be awsome.
I am planning the same mod possibly with leather. I was wondering if I needed to have seams sewn or just overlay. I've seen it done on some high-end exotics and it looks great.

How hard is it to remove and replace the windshield?

With the differences in our early dashes compared to his late dash, the FAQ may prove not as useful to us. The late dash looks much easier to wrap.

The principal will be the same though, it's just implementing it on the early dash that could prove to be hard, at least without seams that is.

Yeh, I'm hearing ya.
I am planning a full custom center console or updating with boxter or something newer. I am mostly interested in the "principals of application" as they will apply to most other dashes as well.

I will, of course, donate my early pics to the faq.

you have to be extreeemely careful in removing the windshield as it is very easy to crack during the removal process. I have been planning on replacing my dash as well but I have decided not to deal with it until I get my windshield replaced when the task is much easier. So if you're planning on replacing the windshield, wait until then to do the dash.

Honestly, you'd be better off to remove the dash to recover it, as opposed to removing the windshield.

I'd only consider doing it like Bryan. He just happened to have the windshield out for a repaint, and it needed replacement anyways. I wouldn't consider removing it just to re-do the dash, pull the dash, that way you can have more wrap around.

From what I've heard, removing the windshield intact is tricky business in a 944. Also, the best possible way to do it would be to remove the dash, but time constaints made that impossible for me.

This is a great project for when you're replacing your windshield. Only took me about an hour.

If dash removal is difficult, perhapse unbolting it and pulling it out a few inches while the windshield is out? That way you get the best of both worlds, without full removal.
