So i broke something else - but now it's serious.
So I finally got my clutch bleeder valve and I installed it and bled my clutch and brakes today. That went fine.
Then I decided to tighten up my sloppy shift linkage. I tightened the bolt at the transaxle and the shifter stiffened up a good bit - wonderful. However I decided to go further, I tried tightening the brace that holds the linkage....and the bolt snapped! The thread is stuck in the transmission housing and the bolt is still through the brace with the rubber bushings hanging on. I’m so incredibly pissed off. I finally am ready to get my car back on the road after a few weeks and this stupid crap happens. I even bought motor mounts to put on! I don't know what to do - all I can think of is to drop the transmission and drill out the thread that broke off and get a new bolt to put through. If anyone has any idea on what I can do PLEASE let me know. Someone suggested that I use "JB weld" however I don't trust it due to all the heat/tension that is put on the brace. The picture shows where I think the bolt goes into.

JB weld would be a temporary fix at best. londel is right, best way to deal with it is to drop the tranny.

maybe try to find a way to take the screw out. maybe make a few cuts in the metal if you can get to it, and then take a screw driver and get it out? not really sure that sucks, sorry

i'm going to TRY the JB weld tomorrow just out of curiousity. but if it doesn't hold we get to learn how to take out a transmission.
i bought my mounts, so when i have some time maybe you and Richard can come assist me.

Bad luck
What is JB weld.I bought a door handle (expensive here) to replace a broken one, and it came out the vice whilest trying to drive mechanism pins out.It dropped & broke the tab off that holds handle to door (screwed from outer door). I think it is pewter so does JB weld hold? |

Do not recommend JB weld for linkage bolt.
Go with the "cut a notch and try to unscrew the nut out" approach. Paul. JB weld is an epoxy that supposedly has the strength of steel - it wirks well for applications that are not under stress or pressure (like shift linkage or door handles. Drop me an email Paul, I may have a door handle for you AFJuvat

I would recommend contacting Jamie@944online.com or there site is www.944online.com
I just bought an engine wiring harness from them for my car. It was in great shape and they shipped it quickly. I also thought the price was very fair.

If notching the bolt and unscrewing it doesnt work you might try a reverse drill bit. Youll need a reversable variable speed drill so you can drill the bolt slowly in reverse. The idea is you drill in a little ways and then the drill bit catches and unscrews the bolt. It works pretty good sometimes but even if it doesnt catch and unscrew the bolt you have a hole in it and you can try an extractor. Tapping new threads is a last resort. Good luck.
