How to clean mating surfaces, need help, QUICK

I need to clean the mating surfaces of my oil pan/engine block...

Have some baked on oil, and acetone won't touch it any help would be appreciated. (bottom end of the engine is exposed right now, don't wanna wait too long on it, issue with engine hoist, etc.)

Hi Ahmet, hey get a scochbrite pad dark red in color and some carb cleaner wet the pad then start a rubbin this should take off the stuff on the pan and block.....clean it with some brake clean it dries quickly or acetone...hope this helps...Stan

If you can find a hard plastic scraper, or a soft metal one.

You can use some very fine sand paper, 600 grade, and to finish it off, 1000 grade.

I use that 2+2 carb cleaner for really tough stains, its great just dont breath it. Also you may want to invest in one of those mini angle grinders. I bought mine from snap on and its proved to be very versitile on many jobs. New Dimension brand brake clean works real well but I would reccomend the 2+2 its much stronger.

Ahmet...for a soft metal scrapper - make one
from 1/2 or 3/4" copper water pipe. From a
length of 9 or 10 inches, mash one end flat for an 1-2" from one end. Get it evenly flat; file it square across and up& down. Use it to push-scrape the surface of the block & pan.
On the 'handle' end, take the burrs off & tape it with electricians tape(Protection,
don't you know).

Ahmet - the way we do it in the shop - GREEN scothbrite, followed by brake clean. If you put it on the scotchbrite it will disentegrate. Don't use a solid object.

I ended up using scotch brite pad, and 2+2 carb cleaner, it really did work quite good.

I went on to clean the pan, and polish it, with some aluminum polish, it looks a whole lot better.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and the precautions, I didn't need something that was THAT strong, although acetone with a towel didn't remove any of it, the scotch pad, and the carb cleaner took all of it off.

PS: I've heard that oven cleaner is not recommended for aluminum...
