Hey! As I was changing my thermostat last night I found out that my snap ring pliers were not quite long enough to reach the snap ring. So, I went to autozone and they had the perfect tool. Its a pair of needlenose pliers that have the top part of the pliers bent at a 90degree angle. The bent part is about 4-5 inches long, so it reaches perfectly to the snap ring. And, since they have long handles, you can get at the snap ring from the top and from the bottom. They were $7.99 and it took off the snap ring on the first try.

Thanks. I remember having a 90 deg pair of needle nose a long time ago.
I wonder if they are strong enough to hold the balance shaft (instead of using the pin spanner wrench) as it's lock nut is being loosened, or put back on when changing belts? |

It is pefect for the balance shaft. I used it to change my balance belt and it worked fine.

PS: Just because it fits perfectly to one guy's car, doesn't mean it'll fit yours(depends on which way your particular snap ring is turned). I tried several, and only the 'axle' snap ring remover (from automotion) worked for me, and made the job VERY easy.
I'll be putting in a different thermostat in the next few days, will try a generic snap ring remover, hopefully it'll work for me too... Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |
