tune up

I was just wondering what all a tune up is.

I took off my distibutor cap to more easily access the thermastat and noticed that it was in pretty bad shape along with the rotor. Earlier I had noticed that the airfilter was pretty dirty and could use a change. The belts are all pretty new and are in good shape. but what else is part of a tune-up? do you need to change the fuel filter?

also how often should you do a tune-up... my therory has always been whenever something doesnt look to be in good condition anymore, but maybe i should be replacing things right before they dont look good anymore.

Why did you take off the distributor to access the thermostat?

i just took the cap off because it was just sortof in the way to get to the thermostat from the top (i have a 87 NA by the way) it wasnt necsesary to do, but i figured 5 wires and two screws to make looking at what i am doing a bit easier wasnt a bad trade off

I recommend replacing the dis cap, plug wires, plugs, fuel filter, coil, air filter, and DME(fuel pump) relay.
