				gauge problems

I bought the car knowing the oil pressure gauge was funky. With the ignition off it reads 0. When the car is running it pegs. I filled the gas tank and got 3/4ths. Temp gauge never gets past 1/4. I could live with the aformentioned problems. I just did a clutch job and now my speedo doesn't work. Any ideas? How long and how much money? SoCal... are you there?

Definitely a project car! Oil Pressure: If the wires on the sender are backwards you will have the gauge peg at 5 and stay there when the key is turned on. This is because there are two separate functions inside the sender. One is a variable resistance (inductance really) and the other is a simple on-off contact for the warning light. So if you hook up the gauge to the warning light the gauge will peg as soon as you turn on the ignition then drop back to almost nothing when the senders switch clicks over due to oil pressure. Now if the warning light works correctly; is on with the key on and goes out a split second after the engine is started then there is a gauge/sender problem. I suggest you check the sender with another gauge. Use one out of an early model 944 as they are separate and not built into an instrument cluster. Or get a digital readout ohm meter from radio shack and test the sender directly. Fuel Level Sender: Pull back the carpet and insulation in the rear cargo area and pop off the rubber plug over the fuel tank sending unit. Pull off and clean the electrical contacts (just pulling them off and plugging them back can clean then) and check the fuel gauge. If it reads different then you found the most common problem. Speedometer: The stock plastic speedometer drive gear inside the instrument cluster breaks all the time. If the sender is good -- you can pull it from the trans and spin it with a drill motor and check for pulses coming out of it -- and there are no breaks in the wires then you have to pull the instrument cluster and take it apart to check the gear. Temp Gauge: This is also a resistance device. You can check the values at the sender with an ohm meter. Now since you have all these things going wrong and the focus is the instrument panel I think I would pull it and check all of the connections on the back. Just the process of disconnecting the harnesses could clean the connections. While you have it out and apart you could fix the dim lighting.

Sounds like another weekend project! I think I'll drive her this week though. I love the new clutch feel. where do I buy the speedo part and is there a tech article to go by? I think SoCal could stay busy full time answering tech questions.
