Heat shield part source?
Hello,
My 944's rattling a bit and after inspection, I found a piece of metal (looks like some sort of heat shield) above the catalytic converter had broken off of its mounting bolt. Looks like I need a replacement and I'm wondering if any of the usual parts houses offer it -- I've looked in the Performance catalog and here on the Pelican site and didn't find anything. (Hoping I don't have to buy this thing from a Porsche dealer). Kind Regards, DL |
I checked the PET and I could not find a heat sheild listed. Sorry

Had the same thing happen to me over a year ago. Pulled off the rusty remains with the intention of replacing it, but never got around to it. I check everything around that area when I change the oil/work under the car and nothing is worn visibly. Regardless, not replacing a heat shield of any kind is a big NO NO, so call Partshaven. They'll hook you up. |
The heatsheild is NOT a separate item.
This is a common problem. you have several choices 1> fit a second hand cat 2> buy some heathshield material "SPECIOFICALLY" rated for a cat, and fit/wrap it around the cat pls note the heatshield does NOT run the whole length of the cat, but about a 3rd of the way down from the front. without this shield you may/will have the following problems 1> extra heat directed at the cabin area (around the console and hi-fi area) 2> if you park on an area with dry leaves after a fast run, you run the risk of igniting what you've parked over HTH Ade |

"The heatsheild is NOT a separate item".
This statement caused a bit of uncertainty so I had another look today. On my early '84 (USA version), the heatshield (that item placed BETWEEN the chassis and the cat) is indeed a separate piece and is in no way physically attached to the converter. With this in mind, I will continue my part search and provide an update on the result. Kind Regards, DL |
A good muffler shop can provide something close to stock or fabricate something for a nominal price,, "Been there, done that"

Part Source - Update
Just an update on my part search.
I found the part from a salvage operation in PA (they advertise in the PCA magazine - AutoTech is the name). The salesperson there (Bill) was very helpful. He knew what I was describing and shipped it out to me. The cost for the part (sans shipping) was $15. I had of course called PartsHeaven but the salesperson there did not know what I was requesting and instead we ended up discussing a catalytic converter - PartHeaven priced at $175. FWIW the AuthTech price for the same part is $75. Kind Regards, DL |
