timing prob????
 

Hi all, new user here.
Anyone ever had this prob.??? I have an 84 non turbo, since i bought it it has always made a bit of a funny graunchy/grinding noise when the engine fires when i start it......its as if the engine and starter motor are fighting a little (you know that grindy noise that starter motor teeth make?....well it sounds a little like that).
The engine turns and runs ok its just when it fires that this sound happens. Was wondering if timing is too advanced but is`nt this electronically controlled??
Any thoughts???

Fix the starter. Timing is fixed by the electronics, the DME.

How long has it been since the timing and balance shaft belts have been replaced?

If you don't know replace them now!

If you do know replace them now!

Other wise replace them NOW!

Fix the starter????? what exactly do you mean???
Belts were done last year......why should i do them again???

this noise just started on mine, i was thinking it was the car saying "hey you i need new belts now or else!!!"

does it sorta sound like you held the key a bit too long but not quite and you know you didnt? if so thats whats mine starting to do... but only everyone once and a while.

know what it is exactly socal? i like hearing the tech stuff, i may not need to know exactly what it is but it makes me feel better:-)

yeah thats what it sounds like - like you held the key a bit too long.....just as it fires its a short grindy noise. Not a smooth firing at all

How does my starter work in 100 words or less:

The ignition key triggers the solenoid (electromagnent) to pull the bendix into the teeth on the flyhwheel closeing the high current circuit to the motor.

The motor spins the flywheel through the bendix to start the engine.

Letting off the "start" possition of the key the solenoid is turned off opening the high current circuit to the starter motor.

The soleniod spring and the bendix spring pulls the bendix off of the teeth on the flywheel.

All of this is supposed to happen quite unobtrusively. You start to get noises from the starter then it's parts have worn too much.

Getting a rebuilt starter from Pep Boys is NOT a good idea. Find a local rebuilder where you can talk one on one with the owner and you will get a good rebuild 99% of the time.

As to timing belts:

We get new owners here all the time that say the PO just did the timing belt before they bought it.

Then two, three weeks later the crying starts as their timing belt or twin cam drive chain breaks causing thousands of dollars in repairs.
