944 vs. 924
I'm looking at one of each, a 1987 944 auto, and a 1981 924 5 speed. Just curious what the advantages are of one or the other. Which would you take? They are both in about the same condition. Thanks.

I personally like the looks of the 944 better, things like fender flairs really make it stand out. But i would much rather have a 5-speed than an auto.

i like an '87 944 look and engine more than i like an '81 924 but an automatic defeats the whole purpose of a sports car so if i had to choose, it would be the 924...
ya can't hold out for a '44 with a 5 speed? maybe even a 951?

The 944 has better brakes, more power, more re-sale value and higher maintenance costs.
The 924 is cheaper and easier to maintain, but suffers in power and braking. The auto vs manual is worth considering, drive them both and see which you prefer. On the brighter side of things, I have enough 924 parts to keep you running for years... ![]()

Yea thats really what I'm stuck between. The great looks of the flaired fenders and better performance of the 944, and the manual 924. I'll have a chance to drive them this weekend and see what happens.

Maby you could find a manual 944 to drive. Not an entirely fair comparison, two cars but one auto/one manual. If you happen to be in the Vermont area, you're welcome to come and drive mine, to see what a manual 944 is like.
Also, look around for a '83 - '85 944. Depending on your financial situation and if you do your own work, I would look at a early 944. If money is tight right now, or you don't do your own work and are concerned about repair costs a 924 is a lot of car for the money, and quite a bit easier/cheaper to maintain. Good Luck,
