Britwrench
howdy,
I'm visiting a friend for a few days and don't have access to any of my manuals, etc. my serpentine broke and I want to be sure I have the proper tension on the new one. do you know the tension for it (and the p/s belt) off the top of your head? thanks ![]() (btw: I kept the old one and am going to bring it next time I see you, it looks horrible and is proof positive that good ole' PW didn't replace all of them even though I asked him to)

Being able to twist it 90 degrees on the longest section is close enough. Did you find the picture recently posted to line up the balance shafts? Search my recent threads.

The official Porsche setting is damn tight then turn the adjuster another two turns. (9.5 on the 9201 tool).
Ok, barbeque time..enjoy the weekend.

thanks Mark. that seems about right as I thought the belt was already tight enough using the old 'tried-and-true' when it began to squeal under a/c load. (obviously it wasn't
) that's why I asked as I also didn't want to overtighten it eitherHugh, I couldn't find the thread. don't put yourself out but if you happen to come across it, lemme know. thanks

polyrib. (my bad, thanks for catching that)
I have a bad habit of calling them serpentines as 1) serpentines are usually polyribs (but not all polyribs are serpentines as your point clearly illustrates) and 2) there are two acessories (read: 3 pulleys) on the same belt which subconciously gets me to think "serpentine." of course between the two, the balance shaft belt is the only true serpentine due to the counter-rotation of the second balance shaft and the belt's subsequent serpentine threading. I guess it's kind of like me calling any copier a Xerox no matter what brand it is ![]() the diagram is still very useful as the timing and balance shaft belts are next on my list of things to get done BTW: if you still have my e-mail, drop me a line with all the details of what you need as I still would like to get a copy of the CDs if they're available. thanks

Serpentine means that it bends both ways. The balance and timing belts do that. The AC/alternator belt doesn't.

It's a special CD. One of my past times is recovering music from old vinyl albums. I copy these to the computer and remove the cracks, clicks, pop and hiss. Takes about an hour a song as I'm very picky about the finished product.
The CD that Ronin is asking about is the noises from the albums. Yes I save these. I put so much time into removing them it seems foolish to just throw them away. Interested?

Mark, I would have bought the belts from you but you're not open on Saturdays (so there) :P
as for the CDs. I discovered that playing the noises that Hugh gets off the albums in my car makes an excellent anti-noise to squeaking belts or any other sound that would otherwise seem worrisome.
