Rear shock replacement?
My newly aquired 86 951 needs its rear shocks replaced, badly. The car is lowered and it's impossible for me to see what shocks are installed from my garage floor.
I was browsing through a Vertex Auto catalog and there are three different brands of shocks listed for the 944/951, and it appears that depending on how the car was originally equipped you can or can't mix and match? I'm soooo confused.

Mine has Koni shocks on the rear. They can only be adjusted by removing the bolt. Rears are red.
The front also has adjustable Koni shocks. They can be adjusted with a little wrench. Fronts are yellow. This combination works well on my car.

Rear Konis should be Yellow for Sport (Porsche oe fit).
Red are Touring D, not oe fit.

I installed the rear Koni yellows which are firmer than the reds. I wasn't aware the reds were not oe fit. One minor tip - when I installed the rears, I tightened the upper nut before aligning the lower hole...it was an inch off so I just pushed it into place and put the bolt through. Now, every time I go over a small bump, the shock squeaks. I suspect its because I force aligned the bottom as opposed to positioning it corrrectly to begin with. I have to go back and loosen everything to eliminate the squeak (I hope).

More info -- it struck me to turn the wheel to full lock to get a gander at the front struts. They have a yellow dust boot (at least it appears to be yellow, very faded). What little I could see of the rears seemed to be metallic.
It sounds like I should go with the Koni yellows (sport)? OE fit and firmer, right? |
