944 upgrades
is it possible to put a turbo on a 944? I know there were differences between the 944 and 944 turbo, but how hard would it be (if possible) to put a turbo on a regular 944? Are there any good sites out there with high performance mods for the regular 944? I found 9xauto!

It can be done, but it is alot of work and money. It will be cheaper to sell and buy a 951.

For more information on this turbo question... Do a search of past posts.
By using that nifty "search" button near the top of the page. And for 944 performance parts: 9xauto: http://www.9xauto.com/index.html Tweeks: http://www.tweeks.com/shop?store=6. Performance Products: http://www.************************/ Vertex Auto: http://**********.com/ 944 Chip: FR Wilk Power Prom: http://frwilk.com/944dme/ 944 V8 Conversion: Rengade Hybrids: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/main.htm * All right... Oh and I didn't list Pelican because I already believe that's a given; being that's where we are. Later all. Stay safe. Bye. ps. Maybe you should starting caring about the locals... Remember, that's who you're asking your questions. ... Oh, and remember to also thank those who have spent their time in order to answer your question(s); even though you can care less. And also, the car you're driving, isn't known for it's speed, or quickness. More so for it's style and handling. So do yourself a favor, and don't launch it. You'll be paying for it in the recent future. So if you want to upgrade, drop that chip in, and do some work towards the suspension; since with these cars, the races are won in the corners.

About the only thing in common between a "regular" 944 and a turbo is the radiator cap. But if you drove both off of a cliff they would be as fast.

I am soo bad with names, was it "Roastin944" that was like 90% done (reportedly) with his NA to Turbo conversion? I think he even stated that he had done for a under a 1K. I wonder if he ever finished?

it's a matter of the compression ratio. Turbo engines run a much lower compression than normally aspirated engines.
As far as the 944 is comcerned, I think it's only different pistons. Possibly a different head casting and probably camshaft profile. But that should be the only internal differences. Of course the intake, exhaust and ECU are going to be different. But that's all bolt on stuff. And you can bolt it all on to a stock 944NA and it will run. But you will probably destroy your engine within a few minutes without making the internal changes first

scrambled, before you post on a forum, you should search and see if your topic has ever been covered before. The reason I say this is because damn near every newbie that has ever come to this site has posted one of two topics before they had 30 posts:
"Can I turbo my NA 944?" and "How do I get more power out of my 944?" no offense to you, but you're sort of fulfilling a newbie stereotype. happy searching ![]()

asked that question. And why you ask. Well, first, I read posts to familiarize myself with how this board was used. And then I used the "search" option, and found out answers to my questions at the time. But then, if my search came up empty, I'd post. And I think the majority of the locals wish more would follow my example. lol. Less wasted posts. ![]() All right. Stay safe all. Bye.

Lets not crucify the new guy just yet......
![]() There are a number of parts that are similar in the 86 and the 86 turbo. Unfortunately the go fast parts are missing. Turbo/Tranny/Intercoolers/Proper Ignition and Timing/ Plumbing ...etc, etc etc...... If you want to go the turbo route it is easier/cheaper to find a turbo. Most of the upgrades that you see out in the different web sites in regards to turbos are meant for the 951. Unfortunately the sites are somewhat misleading because you see/read Turbo kits for sale.... which are meant for the 951 not the 944. Good luck.

However if someone is up for the challange it can be done. I understand by the time I am done with my car it will have cost me more than a 951. However there aren't many like it and it is pretty damned fast.
So scrambled2k3 if you have mechanical skill, lots of spare time, a good deal of money to spend and really really really love your car then go for it. Otherwise save your time, money, frustration and just buy a 951 ![]()

I love cats! I'm terribly allergic to them but love them all the same. Then there is the Jack Russell terrier that the in laws rescued. About six years old and full of personality.
All I do is rag on those that ignore the obvious: Change your timing belts and chain tensioner!

If you're looking for more performance, you might be able to find some reading relief here http://www.lindseyracing.com/ but my advice is to enjoy the 944 for what it is, a world class automobile that beat the Ferrari 308, Corvette, and 928 (by one point) in a 1984 heads up test. It won based on balance and overall performance. They're not stoplight drag cars, they're more like a surgical instrument capable of carving up the countryside.
cheers, P nashville

Ooops, I meant this link http://www.huntleyracing.com/
this is the one with the supercharger kits. BE SURE TO LOOK AT THE ENGINE SHOTS, THERE ARE SOME FANTASTIC PHOTOS OF THE 944 BLOCK. These show you what you've got, something very special, indeed. P
