![]() Hi everybody, happy 4th of july. unfortunately ($$$) my '84 944 is going to need a new clutch within the next few weeks. I am still unsure st this point whether i will try it myself, or pay someone to do it. As most of you know, i like to do EVERYTHING myself, but...... the clutch is a huge job, and i really don't feel like spending the entire weekend (or longer!) upside-down under a car supported by jackstands while removing and re-installing the entire driveline. but, if i can pull the engine to replace the clutch, i will probably do it myself. As someone who has replaced engines in other cars, it appears to be about the same amount of effort to pull and re-install the engine as it would be to pull the transmission. I know the engine is supposed to come out the bottom, but one of my friends who is a mechanic says it comes out the top much easier. Why i want to do this is i would also like to do the oil pan gasket. I'm trying to combine jobs to kill 2 birds with one stone. so the questions are: has anybody ever pulled the engine from the top? and has anybody done the clutch this way? Mike |

do not attempt to take it out of the top, it is a ROYAL pain in the a**. i can drop it out of the bottom in 3 hours. of course dropping the transaxle is no big deal either but if you want to do the pan and clutch the clutch is a 10 min job with the engine out.

I had the same question a few months ago and decided to remove the engine. I did it by unbolting the bellhousing to engine connection and dropping out the bottom. After looking at things, it seems like you could remove from the top by unbolting the bellhousing as I did. I thought i would try it when installing. The bolts are a bit tough to get at, and my car ('86) was such a virgin that they came out easily.

Should take a day doing it the conventional way and with no unexpected problems. I done 2 and the second was much easier after having figured out how to do it.

pulling from the top...yup just did it....yesterday i have just dropped the engine on the engine bay...theres a room but very little room......i suggest that you remove the steering rack...it will be a little easier....mine is a turbo and that is what i did...also yes you can just remove those four bolts(tube to bell housing)...
and when installing it try installing the engine bracket after mating the tube to the bellhousing......be careful when installing the engine...there's only little room for error..........my 0.02 cents |
