Smile Good CD players!

I have been looking for a CD player that would look good in an 87 porsche 944, and i think i found the website:

http://www.midwest-usa.com/

They have last year's Blaupunkts that look perfect in 944's. Also, you can see the pictures of the decks in Internet Explorer only.

I wish I had gone with an OEM looking Blau. I purchased a Pioneer off the demo shelf at Circut City, now dolphins swim across my screen. It just does not have that OEM look.

At first i had an Awesome Panasonic...but it stopped taking in CD so i beat the hell out of it and the Blacklight display went out...it was $200

But now I bought A Sony Xplode For only $148 at best buy...Check best buy magazine every week as I see good CD players on thecover every couple of weeks for cheap...So I saved $50 on mine because new models were coming in.

When it comes to receivers and amplifiers, it's all about Kenwood. Kenwood is the Porsche of amplifiers and receivers. There is no substitute.

Eclipse, Nakamichi (spelling?) and Blau are my favorites. I have a Blaupunkt Alaska and I love it.

Man, you guys don't do much with stereo in your cars. Blaupunk are fine if you like the stock, lame look. The Pioneer have the best looking decks. Panasonic are quite good for the price. Alpine have great amps and speakers as well to go with the decks. Eclipse are really good sound quality. I am putting in a Pioneer Dex-P1 and have to use 1/0 wire for the 3 amps.

nitrosdip: Have you gotten the CD player? Did you go through midwest-usa?

Their CD-players seem very reasonable, and I wish to upgrade from a cass. player in my 944.

If anyone has had experience with midwest-usa, please let me know.

Thanks!
-Zoltan.

I have a silimar model, perhaps last years, RPD545. It is 180 watts. Looks really close to this 550. I got it at Costco for $129, and then the $10 rebate makes it that much less. Plus, returning things at Costco (should the player stop working) is SO easy, even much longer after they even stock the item...

Sorry, i haven't baught anything yet, i am still undecided on which one to get. I think that if i can get ANY cd player for $70 it's a good deal, and these look nice in our cars. The one catch is that these don't have wiring harnesses, if you have one, or can get one, than you're ok.

Cool

Here is a shot of the Blaupunkt Nevada mounted in my '83 944:

I got it in December of 1998 for $279, about twice what you can get it for now. I originally hadthe Blau 10-disc CD changer mounted in the rear storage compartment, but the damn thing broke just as the warranty expired. Instead of fixing it, I got the auxiliary input cable which lets me plug in my portable minidisc or MP3 player. Unfortunately, the CD Changer and AUX input can't be connected at the same time.

I don't use the built-in amps anymore now that I have a Blaupunkt V7000 mounted in the spare tire well. Blau stopped making these things in 1998, which is unfortunate because it's the only 7-channel amp I've ever seen. I have it powering all four mains at 40W each with 200W bridged to the sub at 4ohms. The amp is also unique in that it has a 20W center channel amp, with a summed-mono signal derived from the front L & R inputs. I can even add another sub and run the two in stereo with 80W @ 4ohms apiece. The only bad point about the amp is that the accessories are no longer available, so I am going to have to fashion a sub gain control myself if I was to control it from the dash.

Zoltan- I got the amp and the RCA output adapter from Midwest at a great price ($199!) and the turnaround from Texas to NJ only took 3 or 4 days. The retail box was pretty beat up, but the amp was brand new and packaged inside a larger box with plenty of peanuts.

I'm almost a little upset now that I'm looking at the new line of Blaupunkt amps. Blau claims high power and low heat in a tiny package that would fit easily in a 944's rear storage compartments. A

nyone see one of these babies in action?

Thanks Leigh. I am looking at the Blau Nevada unit as my first choice. (It's selling for $125 at midwest now.)

The current unit in my car is a Blau Reno unit from 1989: it is a DIN setup, but I don't know if it's the same setup as the newer units. Would I need a separate wiring harness? If they aren't available at mid-west, I guess I'd have to go to a Blaupunkt dealer/retailer.

Thanks for the help!
-Zoltan.

Zoltan,

Unfortunately this photo of the Nevada doesn't show the wiring harness attached, but you can get an idea of what you're dealing with:

The included adapters are just a blue plastic plug at one end with six (power) or eight (speaker) wires coming out--it's up to you to connect those wires to your factory system.

Page 32-33 of the instruction manual shows some clear diagrams of the included harnesses. I bought my receiver from Crutchfield, and they included snap-on connectors for the speaker wires--but only 2 instead of the four I needed! For the power connectors, I just cut off the round DIN connector from the factory cassette deck and tied the wires together myself.

If you don't mind cutting the factory DIN connectory off, you won't need a separate wiring harness. If you think there is any chance you'll add a separate amp in the future, I recommend you order the 4-channel RCA preamp-out adapter ($5.80, part #F00E500014) with the receiver. Also consider the Aux Input cable ($12.95, part #7607897093) if you ever want to hook up a portable player.

Best of luck with new stereo!

- Leigh

If you want a really sweet setup, do what I did. I started with the Blaupunkt Nevada. Got the wiring harness also. I cut the old connectors from the wiring harness and made new ones. I used Molex connectors, attached them to the old wiring harness and then attached another set to the end of the Blaupunkt harness. It looks all nice and tidy in there now, just like the factory. And no worries about frying something up.

Also wired up my Sony amp to a box that houses two 10" MTX thunders. Really nice sound. The head unit provides enough wattage to the speakers (40 W. x 4 max, 17 W. x 4 RMS I think) and the amp/MTX's fill it all in with bass.

The harness that fits onto the stereo comes with the stereo. If it didn't, return it.

I don't think you can get a pre-made harness that fits onto the factory 944 harness and then connects to whatever stereo you buy. There are just too many different connectors being used on all these different manufacturers stereo equipment. You may be able to get a harness from Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) that connects your factory wire harness into a harness that will make it easier to hook up to a stereo (you know, all the purple wires from the Crutchfield harness should hook up to the purple wires on the Blaupunkt or Sony or Kenwood, etc.) But you'll still need to do some connecting yourself.

Good Luck.
