Newbee 944 Questions

Hi all. Just picked up a 1986 944 in almost mint condition. I have a few qeustions, but cant seem to find the answers. So here goes.
The car has 105,000 miles on it and has been maintanied pretty well. Its also an automatic.

1. AC blows Ice cold when maintaning speed on a highway(like over 50 or so). But when you step on the gas, it blows blistering hot air through the vents. When you level off, it will go back cold again. In stop and go traffic, give it up, i just turn if off. Why would it blow hot air when I press the gas?

2. At idle in park or neutral, oil pressure is good.Idles in park about 1000rpm. But in drive when sitting still at idle, oil pressure drops to 1 and light flickers. Rev a little (like 100rpm or so)and it goes out What should I check? Can i just bump the idle a little?

3. Drivers side cooling fan doesnt work. Is it a simple replacement job? The passanger side works fine. Car runs very cool when driving. Sitting still it runs a little warmer (just below the top white, not red.)

Thanks for any advice. I dont want to get ripped at a mechanic.

Awsome Car!!

Dave

Vents in the fresh air box are vacuum operated. Some where there is a leak.

Oil pressure is a function of the oil pressure relief valve. Might be bad o-rings on it or even the pistion/valve sticking or weak spring. Also replace the oil filter with a MAHLE brand filter.

The fans on the 86 are controlled by the large silver relay in the back of the relay/fuse box. This also controls the AC. Might be bad. There is also an issue with the ballast resistors for the lower speeds. These are mounted under the dash.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

How will I know? Where is the valve located on these cars?

Looking at the front of the engine the oil filter is on the left hand side just below the valve/cam cover. The housing that the oil filter attaches too is also the oil intercooler and the housing for the oil pressure relief valve.

This is an almost $300 part to replace.

Look at this diagram. Item 34 is the OPRV. 24 is the filter and 33 is the pressure sending unit.

Thanks. Could it be related to idle speed as well? Can this be adjusted? Or is is computer related.

Vacuum leaks affect idle as well as the ability for vacuum operated valves to function.

I think the fan is fine as only one runs. Both when AC is on. Am I correct here? Sman

Ok. The Hot air thing was a vaccume leak. I traced all the hoses to look for a loose connection. Near the Battery on the passanger side, a vaccume hose came disconnected from that black canister. I reattahced and everything works as it should.

On to the next. Where can I find those oil filters locally? And with my car, 86 944, 105,000 miles, automatic. Mostly city driving, what would be the recommended oil?

As you will be keeping the car I concure with Wilks. Buy a case from eBay. For onesies you should be able to find MAHLE at the better auto parts stores. If not then get an order together for www.PellicanParts.com.

A "tune up" on these cars is plugs, air and oil filters, oil change, check the brake fluid and coolant.

Maybe Wayne can give you a deal on a case of oil and air filters.

Don't bother with MAHLE filters. Too much hassle. Go to your local NAPA store and buy a NAPA Gold filter. They are made by WIX/DANA and in tests they consistantly perform at or above the level of the MAHLE filters while being less expensive and easier to find. Just don't use Fram or Pennzoil.

All oil filters do. Some of the valves work, and some (Fram) just plain suck. The valves on the Wix/DANA (NAPA Gold) filters work well.
