Question Speedometer chatter - lube for cable?

Here in Denver, the temp has finally dropped into the 'winter' category. At the same time (it seems) my speedo (84 944) has begun a one-sided conversation - chatter chatter. It still seems to work ok, just makes a lot of noise.

The PO told me he had the speedo replaced (about 76,000 miles ago).

So for the questions:

1) I've read elsewhere how to remove the instrument panel. How about replacing the speedo cable? How much trouble is this? Is this something only 'speedometer' shops do?

2) On the 'should I post this - maybe its a stupid question' side, should I lube the speedo cable as a possible fix?

3) How can I tell if its the speedometer itself or just the cable?

Thanks.

Chances are, it is the cable.

I've had mixed success lubing the cables. Usually by the time they are chattering, they are already too worn to be of much use - try it and see if it helps.

One thing to check first is the connection between the cable and the wheel assy.

Used Marvel Mystery Oil.

Would pull the cable out of the back of the spindle, raise it up and drop the oil down the cable into the sheath. Would chase it with a good blast of shop air. In some cases we would turn the cable with a drill motor while lubing and blasting.

All in all this was done as a favor with the notice that the cable would need to be replaced soon.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I loosened my instrument cluster and when I move it in and out slightly, I can make my chatter stop. I had the chatter, replaced the cable, and still have the chatter. I suspect that if I put a snaptie on the cable, and pull it to the side so it doesn't have such a tight angle in the turn, the chatter will go away, and that's what I'm going to do. you can test it with a string, just tie to the cable and rig it where you can tug on it while you drive. If you can pull the string and make the chatter stop, then you can permanently rig a snap tie to do the same thing permanently.

If this works I'll take the credit. If it doesn't work, well, you know. :-)
